VodafoneThree has announced they have completed the integration of the Vodafone and Three networks with a world-first upgrade, which combines core-level network sharing with access-level network sharing over a multi-vendor 4G and 5G network. The upgrade means that customers now have access to faster services, and improved coverage – around 71% of the UK population now have access to VodafoneThree’s fastest 5G speeds.
The merging of the networks sees Multi-Operator Core Network (MOCN) and Multi-Operator Radio Access Network (MORAN) technologies deployed, which allows any Vodafone or Three customer to connect to any Vodafone or Three cell tower and gain network access across the fastest possible path. VodafoneThree has also said that it has now enabled the benefits of shared C-band spectrum across its sites nationwide, which allows customers to gain access to the fastest 5G speeds.
The coverage enhancements have seen 4G coverage improve, with around 16,500km² of not-spots removed from either network, an area that is around ten times the size of London.
“This world-first network upgrade shows how VodafoneThree is using cutting-edge technology to transform the UK’s digital infrastructure. By unifying core and radio sharing at a national level, while also introducing intelligent orchestration and dynamic capacity management, we’re setting a new benchmark for network performance.
This upgrade means customers are already experiencing improved reliability and coverage, as well as access to our fastest 5G speeds today. But this is just the beginning. As we continue rolling out upgrades through our £11 billion investment, customers can expect even better performance, with even faster speeds.”
