A company that runs four pornography websites has been fined £500,000 for its failure to implement highly effective age assurance measures on UK visitors by Ofcom. Additionally for failing to respond to statutory requests a further fine of £100,000 has been levied.
The Online Safety Act 2023 gives Ofcom powers to levy fines on companies that serve content to UK visitors when they are not compliant with the act. A key requirement is to implement highly effective age assurance on sites that allow pornographic content and that are likely to be accessed by children.
It is not clear when Youngtek added the age verification layer to the front end of the websites it has received the fines for, but there appears to be a verify by credit card or selfie option in operation. So while it appears the firm has not responded to Ofcom it is now possibly compliant, unless the age verification system used is not considered highly effective by Ofcom.
