Spectrum Internet in terms of consumer FTTP services is now ogi with a new website at https://www.ogi.wales
The rebrand also comes with the news that there will be a big push to build their own FTTP network to some 150,000 homes in Wales. This first step represents around 10% of premises in Wales and there may be more announced in the future.
The first areas expected are Haverfordwest in Pembrokeshire, Abergavenny in Monmouthshire and St Athan and Llantwit Major in the Vale of Glamorgan. Apparently the first customers are live on the network in Llanvaches and other areas are expected from August onwards.
We wanted to celebrate our Welsh focus with a positive and engaging brand. In Wales when someone shouts ‘Ogi!’ it’s impossible not to smile – or respond. That’s why we chose Ogi as our name: it’s about connecting people to one another, which is exactly what we do, digitally.
Ben Allwright, CEO of Ogi
In areas where they have not build their own network they are planning to install backhaul capacity in various Openreach handover exchanges and sell GEA-FTTP services as well.
It is impossible to say as yet how much of an impact this will have on the levels of superfast coverage in Wales, but we believe it will be minimal as in line with so many other roll-outs the focus is likely to be on the built up areas of the footprint. For future proofing more FTTP options is very welcome though, but people in local areas are going to get frustrated if roll-outs end up being patchy or overlapping other FTTP networks.
