RiPWiRE is best known by many for being one of the retail providers for the
FTTC Digital Region service in South Yorkshire. Alas it seems RiPWiRE has
ceased trading according to a post from Liam Winder on the RiPWiRE support forums, importantly for customers
their connections are still working.
The communication purported to be from RiPWiRE indicates that while they
have ceased trading, they will continue to provide service while negotiating
with another provider to sell the customer base. RiPWiRE did not solely
service Digital Region customers, they also provided a variety of wireless
connectivity (28GHz Microwave for heavy lift back-haul, 802.16d 3.6GHz WiMAX
connectivity).
The Digital Region website now lists the four providers, ask4, Origin, unitel and littlebigone and is very much
still operating, though the costs of running a new network in the face of
increasing competition in the superfast arena from Virgin Media and the BT
Group are not helping the project.
Updated 07/02/12: Ask4 have
announced that they have taken over the RiPWiRE service and
customers.
if you researched this properly you will have noticed it was first mentioned on the unofficial forums (http://ripwire.netscapist.com) by a member who had problems with their connection and was told by Digital Region that Ripwire had ceased trading.
the MD then posted a message yesterday as many users were speculating what had happened as there had been no official comment from Ripwire or Digital Region until Ripwire themselves posted
Had not seen that netscapist post. Possibly the URL resulted in me missing it.
Will add to item
Lived there 10 years until 2011. Never heard of this scheme. Had VM anyway
This is why most providers don’t serve economically nonviable areas.
RIP being the operative word !!
This is sad news the service was acually quite good .I had got my call from ask4 on sunday i just hope digital region dont go belly up aswell .what they need to do is advertise have a leaflet drop in the areas where adsl is poor its not rocket science
