You are not alone if your Sky broadband is not working

We’d love to provide you with more information, but for now all we can say is that around 10:30pm a big outage occurred at Sky and people still have no Internet connectivity in various areas.

Off to see if any status updates from Sky, an initial check of the Sky status page says no problems, but various facebook groups are reporting problems.

The joke in IT circles is that faults are either DNS or BGP issues and some searching suggests connecting to sites via their IP address is working, meaing this issue may fall into the DNS camp. So if you are with Sky try configuring a device to use an external DNS resolver e.g. for IPv4 the Google resolvers are 8.8.8.8 and/or 8.8.4.4. Open DNS is one of many other options and their DNS resolvers are at 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220, plus there are some useful guides on what you need to do for people who’ve never used a different DNS resolver other then the one their ISP offers automatically.

  1. Could be a reason why some people had problems with Zzoomm last night. my connection went off about six hours ago.

  2. Sky is looking very sick on BQM. On an FTTC circuit in Surrey, problem started at 11.40pm Monday, with disconnections and bursts of high latency. Intermittent network congestion most of yesterday with further disconnections at 10.20am. Then a step in minimum latency from the normal 10ms to 30ms at 1.40am this morning and the bursts of high latency continue. No disturbance seen on Talk-Talk dependent circuits.

  3. Do we have data that shows national outages reported overtime by ISP? Whilst with sky (10 or so years) there must have been 50+ times where the line was synced with an IP assigned but no data throughput due to this sort of issue. On my second line ran during same time period (BT, talktalk then Vodafone), I don’t recall more than a handful. Granted the sky got the majority of usage. Would be interesting to see if sky is indeed facing these types of issues above trend.

  4. @ukhardy071 I’m not sure such data would be easy to do reliably as ‘reports’ aren’t going to be accurate. This said we’re looking at a project at the moment that might give hints of problems by ISP.. but more indicators not stats on uptiem.
