Another mobile not-spot has been eliminated and a Starlink mobile backhaul solution is being used to provide data capacity for the new 4G mobile tower using the Virgin Media O2 network. The Starlink solution is being used as none of the traditional fibre backhaul options were available, but that is set to change later in the year and once that happens 5G will be switched on so that Craster and the surrounding area will have gone from nothing to 4G and then 5G in short order.
Craster while a small village on the Northumberland coast is a popular tourist destination attracing some 250,000 visitors a year via nearby Dunstanburgh Castle which is a National Trust property. The village has fixed line broadband by virtue of VDSL2 with a cabinet in the village and Dunstan just a few hundred metres inland also has its own VDSL2 cabinet, and even a small number of Openreach full fibre lines.
As part of our commitment to improving rural connectivity, we’re using innovative satellite connectivity to bring mobile coverage to Craster for the first time. Our investment to deliver reliable connectivity in this beautiful area will be a boon for the many visitors that come here each year, transforming their experience and improving opportunities for local businesses and residents.
Steven Verigotta, Director of Mobile Delivery at Virgin Media O2
This has truly been a labour of love for our community. The mast is more than just a symbol of progress – it’s a lifeline.
Reliable mobile signal is no longer a luxury; it’s a necessity. This project will make a real difference in the daily lives of residents, businesses, and tourists alike.
Craster Parish Council Vice-Chair, Cllr Margaret Brooks
This is a huge step for Craster and Dunstan. The improvements in connectivity will make a meaningful difference in the lives of all who live, work, and visit here.
I’m delighted to see how this partnership has come together to create such a positive change for the community.
I would also like to thank Northern Powergrid for their support.
Local Ward Councillor Wendy Pattison
Will this new tower be available to other operators’ customers (under the Shared Rural Network)?
