Sky

Summary

Sky Broadband is one of the most recognisable broadband providers in the UK. It is part of the larger Sky group and offers a wide range of services from standard broadband through fibre to full-fibre broadband service options. Because of its size and reach you will find it available in many areas. If you are already a Sky TV or Sky Mobile customer then the broadband side may feel like a natural extension.

Additional Comments

One of the strengths of Sky Broadband is its broad availability and familiar brand. Because the company has been operating for many years it has solid support processes, many package choices and regular promotional offers. For a typical household that just wants dependable internet, Sky provides a safe choice. The full-fibre options especially mean you can get very high speeds if your area is covered, in some cases the UK's fastest broadband speeds, which benefits streaming, online gaming and working from home.

However there are a few areas where Sky Broadband tends to fall short of the best-in-class providers. For example, across recent customer satisfaction surveys Sky’s score is moderate rather than exceptional. That means while the service works well for many, you should not assume it will be flawless everywhere. Reliability and speed tend to depend heavily on your local infrastructure and how far you are from network points. Some users report slower speeds or occasional drop-outs. Home Wi-Fi setups can also limit what you actually experience, despite having a fast line.

Another factor to keep in mind is cost and contract terms. Sky offers good deals (view our best broadband deals page for more), especially if you bundle TV and fibre broadband together, but once the initial promotional period ends your monthly fee can rise. Checking the renewal terms and what happens after your contract finishes is wise. Also you may be tied into a longer contract (for example 24 months) which limits your flexibility if you want to move or change provider. Equipment wise the router and Wi-Fi gear supplied by Sky do the job in many homes. If you have a large house or need strong coverage across multiple floors you may still want to upgrade internally with a better router or Wi-Fi mesh system.

Feedback on the support provided to Sky Broadband customers is mixed. Many say that issues get sorted and support staff are professional, but others report delays, long wait times or frustrations when resolving complex problems. One thing that does help is the fact that Sky’s broadband business is mature and the company has resources to support maintenance, upgrades and network investment. That gives a level of confidence. If you value brand stability and broad coverage then Sky is a strong contender.

If you are considering Sky Broadband you should check your exact address for the real speed you will likely get, ask about any installation or equipment fees, check what the monthly price will be after the initial deal ends, and consider your internal Wi-Fi setup. If you live in an area with full-fibre broadband availability it could be a very good fit.

I have been with Sky for over 15 years and from 512Kbps to the highest was 40Mbps, FTTC, the service has been very variable. Currently the speed is 24.999Mbps so nearly half the speed I had seven weeks ago at 40Mbps. I have repeatedly complained to Sky but their excuse is it is higher than the minimum speed you are rated at. So they do absolutely nothing to correct the failure. Yes they sent out engineers, but they would not test the speed I was receiving at my router. As soon as I have FTTP I am changing, and not to anything Sky may offer. They don't care about their customers, they know they will get another one to sign up the same day I will eventually cancel the contract.

I've been with sky for 10 years now and in that time they have been reliable and only had one outage. I would highly recommend them if you're looking for a solid connection.

I live in a rural area and our mobile signals are very poor. Sky supply fibre to the cabinet at the botton of the road. they say w should have at least 50m download. it us usuallyless than 20. when we tryto complain it involves a long wait on phone and then answer the usual questions that we know by heart then sometimes they say will contact BT and surprisingly within 24 hours the speed is back to what it should be. The last time they said how to change the channel on the router but it is now worse than before. That is the usual experience with Sky and most of the time now we just put up with slow speeds and do not waste 2 hours on the phone

I had upgraded to mega fast fibre but never received these speeds or downloads. I believe that they are slowing down my usage as home speed tests records lower values than their own speed test app. I once sent Sky an email with snippet captures of readings I had taken to raise my concerns, but never got a reply.20.02.21. I read in the news that Virgin and BT have already raised their prices mid contract and Sky intend to follow in April 2021 with an additional hike of £74 a Year. If this is the case I will be leaving Sky after 6 Year's of loyalty. I don't like switching but if after all they compressed usage, raise prices mid-contract and don't consider customer loyalty, it's time to move on and switch. 20.02.21.

Terrible service when trying to contact by telephone with wait times of over an hour & that's if you are able to get through at all. Having recently upgraded to SkyQ I was promised d/l times of UPTO 36 mbps from my Sky HD connection. Sent a letter to Sky as unable to reach them by phone as my BB speed had only increased to an average 24mbps from iro 17mbps. I was promised an engineer visit but when the engineer rang he was unable to come into my property to check for issues due to COVID which is being used as an excuse for poor service by all & sundry so goodness only knows when the issue will be corrected now. A neighbour has BB with TalkTalk & getting a d/l speed of iro 64 mbps from the same fibre BB box in the road & paying less so guess what will happen when my contract ends!! For a media company, they are an absolute disgrace when it comes to Customer Service & not fit for purpose & need to sort their act out.

Sky support has a waiting time of about 30min on average is fine in present circumstances. But on two occasions the operators depth of knowledge was obviously inadequate for my question and (Port forwarding) and these operators do not know what router model you have nor it’s specification. In truth I think a recent software upgrade has added security that and parameters that make port forwarding more difficult and they will not advise how to implement it. Also the router doesn’t seem to list more than 10 devices and and the operative thought that 15 devices off the router was a lot! Tried to sell me Boost that actually has no performance benefits

Recently Sky has been really bad. Dropping out all the time. Yes there was an issue in the Junction box - but that supposedly got fixed - but I am sat here looking at my Net Uptime Monitor set up to Poll OpenDNS, Google and Sky and its dropping one of those end points every few minutes at the moment or the Response Time goes through the roof. So even if physically, mechanically the Link is good once it gets out onto Sky's network the traffic is still seeing issues - come on Sky Sort it out

Generally Sky has been pretty good, though occasionally and for no apparent reason the service disappears and there is no broadband, sometimes for as much as 15 minutes, then it returns to normal of its own accord. I notice it particularly be I have Sky Q which relies on an internet connection and programmes are interrupted when the broadband is lost
