Sky

Summary

Sky Broadband is one of the most recognisable broadband providers in the UK. It is part of the larger Sky group and offers a wide range of services from standard broadband through fibre to full-fibre broadband service options. Because of its size and reach you will find it available in many areas. If you are already a Sky TV or Sky Mobile customer then the broadband side may feel like a natural extension.

Additional Comments

One of the strengths of Sky Broadband is its broad availability and familiar brand. Because the company has been operating for many years it has solid support processes, many package choices and regular promotional offers. For a typical household that just wants dependable internet, Sky provides a safe choice. The full-fibre options especially mean you can get very high speeds if your area is covered, in some cases the UK's fastest broadband speeds, which benefits streaming, online gaming and working from home.

However there are a few areas where Sky Broadband tends to fall short of the best-in-class providers. For example, across recent customer satisfaction surveys Sky’s score is moderate rather than exceptional. That means while the service works well for many, you should not assume it will be flawless everywhere. Reliability and speed tend to depend heavily on your local infrastructure and how far you are from network points. Some users report slower speeds or occasional drop-outs. Home Wi-Fi setups can also limit what you actually experience, despite having a fast line.

Another factor to keep in mind is cost and contract terms. Sky offers good deals (view our best broadband deals page for more), especially if you bundle TV and fibre broadband together, but once the initial promotional period ends your monthly fee can rise. Checking the renewal terms and what happens after your contract finishes is wise. Also you may be tied into a longer contract (for example 24 months) which limits your flexibility if you want to move or change provider. Equipment wise the router and Wi-Fi gear supplied by Sky do the job in many homes. If you have a large house or need strong coverage across multiple floors you may still want to upgrade internally with a better router or Wi-Fi mesh system.

Feedback on the support provided to Sky Broadband customers is mixed. Many say that issues get sorted and support staff are professional, but others report delays, long wait times or frustrations when resolving complex problems. One thing that does help is the fact that Sky’s broadband business is mature and the company has resources to support maintenance, upgrades and network investment. That gives a level of confidence. If you value brand stability and broad coverage then Sky is a strong contender.

If you are considering Sky Broadband you should check your exact address for the real speed you will likely get, ask about any installation or equipment fees, check what the monthly price will be after the initial deal ends, and consider your internal Wi-Fi setup. If you live in an area with full-fibre broadband availability it could be a very good fit.

Found out that when they changed my hub they should have changed my boosters as well and the problems I’ve been having are probably because the boosters haven’t been working all this time. Of course you can’t contact sky at the moment as this would be non urgent.

Been a sky broadband coustomer for 9 years now, first on there llu product as it offered slighty higher speeds than bt's adsl,as i'm fairly far from the exchange then as a fibre customer. Other than some hickups when fibre was first installed it has been solid.

Virgin Media fibre broadband excellent speed when working. If you need a reliable provider Virgin are not the company. 4 days of outages in January, promised the situation was resolved then another full day out in February! Customer service appalling.

My Sky Unlimited Broadband has almost the slowest `speed` in the UK at only an average of 2.5Mbps that has been stated to be `amongst the slowest 1% in the UK`. I live in South East London - about 4 miles from the City - not out in a very rural area. My home is less than 2 miles from my local BT Telephone Exchange. I don`t really need `Super Fast Broadband` or I would have had to change providers but I don`t understand how every other Broadband provider in my road can supply much faster speeds using the same BT Telephone lines. Sky have supposedly investigated my Broadband speed limitations 3 times over the past 10 years each time `upgrading` my Sky router / Sky Hub but achieving no improvement. Then blaming the cabling in the 1.9 miles from my Home to the BT Telephone Exchange and my Home`s internal telephone wiring - but as I mentioned above all of my neighbours have much faster Broadband from other providers. Having been with Sky for some years now I have mostly had a good experience. In this last 6 months things have started to go downhill. They appear to have lost the will to look after existing customers and now concentrate on new. A shame because until this I would have considered them one of the best . Always very responsive to problems and very keen to keep the customer happy. Disappointed I have to say.

I have Sky Unlimited Broadband but unfortunately I get what has been described after various speed tests as `amongst the slowest 1% Broadband services in the UK`. I never have any `faster` than 3Mbps - approximately 95% of the time it is no more than 2.5Mbps. I live in South East London only about 3 miles from the Thames and about 2 miles from my BT Telephone Exchange - I mention these points just to show that I am not in a rural location. Sky not being able to provide any improvement / faster Broadband in London I regard as disgraceful ! They have never been able to explain why approximately 99% of the UK has faster Broadband than a customer in the London area. Family members living in the Highlands of Scotland and adjacent to Salisbury plain have much faster Broadband than I have. Chris
