Sky

Summary

Sky Broadband is one of the most recognisable broadband providers in the UK. It is part of the larger Sky group and offers a wide range of services from standard broadband through fibre to full-fibre broadband service options. Because of its size and reach you will find it available in many areas. If you are already a Sky TV or Sky Mobile customer then the broadband side may feel like a natural extension.

Additional Comments

One of the strengths of Sky Broadband is its broad availability and familiar brand. Because the company has been operating for many years it has solid support processes, many package choices and regular promotional offers. For a typical household that just wants dependable internet, Sky provides a safe choice. The full-fibre options especially mean you can get very high speeds if your area is covered, in some cases the UK's fastest broadband speeds, which benefits streaming, online gaming and working from home.

However there are a few areas where Sky Broadband tends to fall short of the best-in-class providers. For example, across recent customer satisfaction surveys Sky’s score is moderate rather than exceptional. That means while the service works well for many, you should not assume it will be flawless everywhere. Reliability and speed tend to depend heavily on your local infrastructure and how far you are from network points. Some users report slower speeds or occasional drop-outs. Home Wi-Fi setups can also limit what you actually experience, despite having a fast line.

Another factor to keep in mind is cost and contract terms. Sky offers good deals (view our best broadband deals page for more), especially if you bundle TV and fibre broadband together, but once the initial promotional period ends your monthly fee can rise. Checking the renewal terms and what happens after your contract finishes is wise. Also you may be tied into a longer contract (for example 24 months) which limits your flexibility if you want to move or change provider. Equipment wise the router and Wi-Fi gear supplied by Sky do the job in many homes. If you have a large house or need strong coverage across multiple floors you may still want to upgrade internally with a better router or Wi-Fi mesh system.

Feedback on the support provided to Sky Broadband customers is mixed. Many say that issues get sorted and support staff are professional, but others report delays, long wait times or frustrations when resolving complex problems. One thing that does help is the fact that Sky’s broadband business is mature and the company has resources to support maintenance, upgrades and network investment. That gives a level of confidence. If you value brand stability and broad coverage then Sky is a strong contender.

If you are considering Sky Broadband you should check your exact address for the real speed you will likely get, ask about any installation or equipment fees, check what the monthly price will be after the initial deal ends, and consider your internal Wi-Fi setup. If you live in an area with full-fibre broadband availability it could be a very good fit.

Good service but getting very expensive

Sky provides a service over the BT Openreach networks so the only flaw in Sky broadband is BT Openreach.
BrianGJSteer 20 Jan 2022 (reviewed 4 years ago)
They are not proactive. They won't take action when the speed drops until I call them, and only take action if there is no connection or the speed at the router is 18.5 Mbps or less. I used to get 40 Mbps, now that is down to 30 Mbps, sometimes dropping below that. You wait on the phone for ages to get through and they really don't care.

Speed drops intermittently

All though I cannot get 55-70 Megs I am a satisfied with the speed that I’m getting 44meg. It reliable and dose all that I need. I’ve been wit sky for some time and they are always very helpful when needed.

We have been a customer of Sky since around 2003, and the service at times has been fairly good, but the last few years the service and reliability has fallen to the lowest ever. When we first had FTTC we had 40 Mbps, which steadily over a year or two dropped to next to nothing, they got that sorted, back to 35 Mbps, then dropped to under 18 Mbps, up to 32 Mbps, now at 25 Mbps within a few days. I know if I moan at them they will do absolutely nothing about it, until it drops to below 18 Mbps. I can no longer recommend them at all as they really don't care.

Sky seem indifferent to my concerns that the speed I started off with, 40 Mbps., dropping at one point to 20 Mbps., now 36 Mbps., they refuse to do anything more to help. They did have Openreach engineers to call, but they were incapable of improving the connection. The router they supply, in my case the SR203, has problems that resulted in me changing to a TP-Link VR2100. Their contracts seem to be 24 months rather long so awkward to change supplier.

Have been with Sky 8 years in 4 addresses. Full fibre has finally arrived at my backyard. Sky on the phone offers Ultraspeed (100Bpm speed guaranteed) for £35 pm +£5 for Boost. Advert on Thinkbroadband says £32 pm for same including Talk Anytime, presumably for new accounts. My Talk Anytime is currently discounted down to £8 pm. Where is the special deal for existing loyal customers?

Currently the service is flaky as hell. Micro dropouts constantly where the app I use to register connectivity by pinging various 3rd party DNS servers is dropping several times a day for anywhere of a minute to 3 minutes at a time. Not great on zoom calls or when streaming

My download speed of 10.4 mb/s, and my upload speed of 4.9 mb/s, are simply appalling
