Sky

Summary

Sky Broadband is one of the most recognisable broadband providers in the UK. It is part of the larger Sky group and offers a wide range of services from standard broadband through fibre to full-fibre broadband service options. Because of its size and reach you will find it available in many areas. If you are already a Sky TV or Sky Mobile customer then the broadband side may feel like a natural extension.

Additional Comments

One of the strengths of Sky Broadband is its broad availability and familiar brand. Because the company has been operating for many years it has solid support processes, many package choices and regular promotional offers. For a typical household that just wants dependable internet, Sky provides a safe choice. The full-fibre options especially mean you can get very high speeds if your area is covered, in some cases the UK's fastest broadband speeds, which benefits streaming, online gaming and working from home.

However there are a few areas where Sky Broadband tends to fall short of the best-in-class providers. For example, across recent customer satisfaction surveys Sky’s score is moderate rather than exceptional. That means while the service works well for many, you should not assume it will be flawless everywhere. Reliability and speed tend to depend heavily on your local infrastructure and how far you are from network points. Some users report slower speeds or occasional drop-outs. Home Wi-Fi setups can also limit what you actually experience, despite having a fast line.

Another factor to keep in mind is cost and contract terms. Sky offers good deals (view our best broadband deals page for more), especially if you bundle TV and fibre broadband together, but once the initial promotional period ends your monthly fee can rise. Checking the renewal terms and what happens after your contract finishes is wise. Also you may be tied into a longer contract (for example 24 months) which limits your flexibility if you want to move or change provider. Equipment wise the router and Wi-Fi gear supplied by Sky do the job in many homes. If you have a large house or need strong coverage across multiple floors you may still want to upgrade internally with a better router or Wi-Fi mesh system.

Feedback on the support provided to Sky Broadband customers is mixed. Many say that issues get sorted and support staff are professional, but others report delays, long wait times or frustrations when resolving complex problems. One thing that does help is the fact that Sky’s broadband business is mature and the company has resources to support maintenance, upgrades and network investment. That gives a level of confidence. If you value brand stability and broad coverage then Sky is a strong contender.

If you are considering Sky Broadband you should check your exact address for the real speed you will likely get, ask about any installation or equipment fees, check what the monthly price will be after the initial deal ends, and consider your internal Wi-Fi setup. If you live in an area with full-fibre broadband availability it could be a very good fit.

I have never been slowed down or cut off hence my five stars for reliability. The only reason I have deducted a star for overall satisfaction is that I think I should be getting fibre to the house for the price I pay for an average speed of 17 which suits my needs at present. I shall be looking for a price deduction when I come to renew my contract shortly, however.

At least as good as my previous provider, BT, and much cheaper.

No problems with Sky been with them years good support on the rare occasions I have needed any, no probs with speed either

I get TV, phone and broadband from Sky and pay them a fortune for the privilege. I'm too lazy to re-platform to a competitor, however, and Sky know it. Nonetheless when my the wifi functions of my router died and I bellyached about the £99 + £10p&p cost of a replacement they found an upgraded package of hardware and discounts that ended up with me getting a new router, new set-top-box and costing £4/mth less. Yes, I'm tied-in for another 18 months but was I really going to move away during that time? No.

I noticed slight instability and called Sky who recognised I ought to have a in upgrade, this they arranged without hesitation and because I had previously bought an extender they added a new comparable extender. These arrived and provided an excellent performance reliability and stable speed. My only slight moan is something occasional happens to the Wi-Fi signal at 1am-ish which kills my sleep-music; I assume it’s some service monitoring/ upgrade/maintenance process that causes a temporary disconnect that the streaming service can’t cope with. But hearing all the issues people have with broadband and Wi-Fi I count myself lucky that my line, exchange and local connections are all as good as they are.
brummygit 20 Jun 2020 (reviewed 5 years ago)
Poor reliability recently but to be fair to Sky, this is down to BT Openreach and their copper cables. Sky have been reasonably responsive but it takes around a week for Openreach to do anything.
BrianGJSteer 20 May 2020 (reviewed 6 years ago)
Overall I am reasonably satisfied. My reservation though is that our speed has steadily dropped from 32 Mbps down to 27 Mbps over around five years. I am very tempted therefore to move to Gigaclear if and when they come to the village.
pluto69 20 May 2020 (reviewed 6 years ago)
The download and upload speeds are great and are constant right through the day.
