Sky

Summary

Sky Broadband is one of the most recognisable broadband providers in the UK. It is part of the larger Sky group and offers a wide range of services from standard broadband through fibre to full-fibre broadband service options. Because of its size and reach you will find it available in many areas. If you are already a Sky TV or Sky Mobile customer then the broadband side may feel like a natural extension.

Additional Comments

One of the strengths of Sky Broadband is its broad availability and familiar brand. Because the company has been operating for many years it has solid support processes, many package choices and regular promotional offers. For a typical household that just wants dependable internet, Sky provides a safe choice. The full-fibre options especially mean you can get very high speeds if your area is covered, in some cases the UK's fastest broadband speeds, which benefits streaming, online gaming and working from home.

However there are a few areas where Sky Broadband tends to fall short of the best-in-class providers. For example, across recent customer satisfaction surveys Sky’s score is moderate rather than exceptional. That means while the service works well for many, you should not assume it will be flawless everywhere. Reliability and speed tend to depend heavily on your local infrastructure and how far you are from network points. Some users report slower speeds or occasional drop-outs. Home Wi-Fi setups can also limit what you actually experience, despite having a fast line.

Another factor to keep in mind is cost and contract terms. Sky offers good deals (view our best broadband deals page for more), especially if you bundle TV and fibre broadband together, but once the initial promotional period ends your monthly fee can rise. Checking the renewal terms and what happens after your contract finishes is wise. Also you may be tied into a longer contract (for example 24 months) which limits your flexibility if you want to move or change provider. Equipment wise the router and Wi-Fi gear supplied by Sky do the job in many homes. If you have a large house or need strong coverage across multiple floors you may still want to upgrade internally with a better router or Wi-Fi mesh system.

Feedback on the support provided to Sky Broadband customers is mixed. Many say that issues get sorted and support staff are professional, but others report delays, long wait times or frustrations when resolving complex problems. One thing that does help is the fact that Sky’s broadband business is mature and the company has resources to support maintenance, upgrades and network investment. That gives a level of confidence. If you value brand stability and broad coverage then Sky is a strong contender.

If you are considering Sky Broadband you should check your exact address for the real speed you will likely get, ask about any installation or equipment fees, check what the monthly price will be after the initial deal ends, and consider your internal Wi-Fi setup. If you live in an area with full-fibre broadband availability it could be a very good fit.

Sky has not been a reliable broadband service. I have always had to complain that the service had either failed or deteriorated. It started at 40 Mbps, and is now 22 Mbps, roughly half the speed. For that reason I chose to go with Gigaclear, 500 Mbps and that is what I get at the Linksys router they provide. Why Sky have failed to be proactive in ensuring their customers have a reliable and consistent broadband supply I don't know, as when I last had an engineer to the house to sort out the yo-yo broadband, they knew and shewed me the failure of their supply, but they relied on me to tell them to do something about it. If they became proactive instead of inactive, they may retain a few more customers.

In my opinion the service from Sky is excellent. Unfortunately my speeds on FTTC have fallen from maximum 80/20 in 2016 to only 61/20 in 2022 and it has been lower. There was one significant drop to 69/20 in 2020 when my neighbours switched from Virgin to BT Internet. We share a cable from the street to the properties and it is obvious that adding a second fibre connection has compromised my speeds. Since then, further drops, no doubt as demand for fibre has increased and the cabinet fills. Sky have been responsive when I've complained, but it is on Openreach to fix their unsatisfactory infrastructure. No sign of FTTP any time soon for me. :-(

My Home`s `Sky Unlimited` Broadband is so slow that from Broadband websites such as this I have found out that it is amongst the `slowest 1% in the UK`. I find this absolutely ridiculous as I live in SE London only about 5 miles from central London - not out in a `remote rural location`. From Speed tests on here which I am sure are fairly accurate I am guessing that my average download `speed` is approximately 2.6Mbps - hardly ever above 3.0Mbps. I do have a fairly `modern` / up to date Sky Hub Router which was given to me to `increase my download speed` - it made no difference at all ! I have been told that this is because I live 2 miles from the local BT Telephone Exchange - is that an excuse that most Broadband customers would accept ? That `speed` is usually just enough for the very limited stuff that I want to download onto my Computer and `luckily` is is usually just enough to be able to download Sky TV programs at Standard definition although obviously they take a long time to download. Regarding breakdowns / `cannot connect` episodes I have found it fairly reliable over the course of many years that I have been using it although Sky have increased the monthly price a LOT over the last 4 - 5 years. So regarding `value for money` - remembering the price increases over the last 5 years and at the current price I feel that most people would definitely NOT consider it so because of the ridiculously low download speed. With average download sub 15 Mbps, and upload around 0.7 last night, and no plans for Openreach to provide FTTC locally (so the post-2030 future is open, and perhaps beyond their reach), that isn't promising. Sky's support and attitude is pretty dire ... almost non-existent in not being able to provide a new router (I've still got the original O2 wifi box that is straining under the load ....... and although G.Net is in the streets on both frontages, and a termination just by the Openreach footway box and entry into the building, our housing provider Peabody Trust has been havering for almost 24-25 months .... and exhibit no understanding or grasp.

SKY - to be totally fair Sky Customer Service has been brilliant this last 2 years. Internet kept dropping out and 5 or 6 engineers and three Hubs and a Booster (as well as 2 ‘line changes’ by Openreach) later it is MUCH more stable. Now it is just WiFi keeps dropping out. They came to the conclusion that it is the ‘environment’ at fault, nothing they can do about. Therefore they said I could leave at anytime without any penalty for leaving in mid-contract. Am now waiting to see if BT fit FTTP and I can go full fibre.

We've been with Sky for over 15 years, but the service has been unreliable especially since we have been working from home. I chose to use a TP-Link VR2100 in place of the SR203, but neither routers give a reliable service, which has to be Sky, not the router. The TP-Link is more reliable, but the connection drops a few times a day.

Been with them 22 days as part of a TV & Broadband package - absolutely terrible. The switch was meant to happen on 31/1 and it didn't. Then on 13/02/22 the switch happened and I was disconnected from the previous provider. Swapped the router to the sky router ..... no internet. I was without internet until they eventually sent an Openreach engineer on 17/2/22 who discovered they had copied BT's profile, so although I had internet to the fibre ONT point, the Sky hub could not make the connection. The Openreach engineers rebuilt the profile to the profile it should be and got my internet working. Now I have internet, I have been suffering lag and packet loss while gaming. While lag is usually a game issue, packet loss was new. I've used Think Broadband's BQM and established the packet loss appears to be the internet connection, not the game. I don't rate Sky so far, but I need it for

Very reliable but very expensive compared with other providers with no allowance made for loyalty when contract renews so may go elsewhere.
