Sky

Summary

Sky Broadband is one of the most recognisable broadband providers in the UK. It is part of the larger Sky group and offers a wide range of services from standard broadband through fibre to full-fibre broadband service options. Because of its size and reach you will find it available in many areas. If you are already a Sky TV or Sky Mobile customer then the broadband side may feel like a natural extension.

Additional Comments

One of the strengths of Sky Broadband is its broad availability and familiar brand. Because the company has been operating for many years it has solid support processes, many package choices and regular promotional offers. For a typical household that just wants dependable internet, Sky provides a safe choice. The full-fibre options especially mean you can get very high speeds if your area is covered, in some cases the UK's fastest broadband speeds, which benefits streaming, online gaming and working from home.

However there are a few areas where Sky Broadband tends to fall short of the best-in-class providers. For example, across recent customer satisfaction surveys Sky’s score is moderate rather than exceptional. That means while the service works well for many, you should not assume it will be flawless everywhere. Reliability and speed tend to depend heavily on your local infrastructure and how far you are from network points. Some users report slower speeds or occasional drop-outs. Home Wi-Fi setups can also limit what you actually experience, despite having a fast line.

Another factor to keep in mind is cost and contract terms. Sky offers good deals (view our best broadband deals page for more), especially if you bundle TV and fibre broadband together, but once the initial promotional period ends your monthly fee can rise. Checking the renewal terms and what happens after your contract finishes is wise. Also you may be tied into a longer contract (for example 24 months) which limits your flexibility if you want to move or change provider. Equipment wise the router and Wi-Fi gear supplied by Sky do the job in many homes. If you have a large house or need strong coverage across multiple floors you may still want to upgrade internally with a better router or Wi-Fi mesh system.

Feedback on the support provided to Sky Broadband customers is mixed. Many say that issues get sorted and support staff are professional, but others report delays, long wait times or frustrations when resolving complex problems. One thing that does help is the fact that Sky’s broadband business is mature and the company has resources to support maintenance, upgrades and network investment. That gives a level of confidence. If you value brand stability and broad coverage then Sky is a strong contender.

If you are considering Sky Broadband you should check your exact address for the real speed you will likely get, ask about any installation or equipment fees, check what the monthly price will be after the initial deal ends, and consider your internal Wi-Fi setup. If you live in an area with full-fibre broadband availability it could be a very good fit.

Sky have been good for many years

I have used sky for a few years now, not quite the cheapest but excellent service. Speed down 79999 and up 20000. I have had no breaks in service and I have found customer service excellent (once you get past the endless loops of automatic messages and misinterpreted responses which inevitably lead to a message to use the website)

Quite a poor month for stability, numerous drop outs when trying to WFH. Required 2-3 router reboots this month alone. Long outage for about 3 hours one morning for most of east anglia. My sky app is hopeless when broadband isn’t working as it tries to test it but obviously can’t connect & therefore thinks you’ve got an issue in your house. No way to check on the sky website about outages. It was only through social media I knew about major problems.

Mostly good this month. But occasionally very slow.

We have been with Sky for nearly 15 years for TV and broadband. The service steadily improved over the first ten years or so, and once we had FTTC, we had up to 40 Mbps as we are a mile or so from the cabinet. Over the last two years though the service has deteriorated to 30 Mbps and even lower on occasion, 20 Mbps, and although I complained, they did send engineers out, but neither one could correct the drop in speed. They simply said tough, put up with it, not in those words but that is what their words meant. We can just about manage, with the regular dropouts with no internet and the inevitable crass explanation of, 'Too many devices'. Plus DHCP and DNS problems forced me to unplug the SR203 replacing it with TP-Link VR2100 and Deco M9 mesh, as their hardware just isn't up to it. Support overall is poor, 30 min at least at a time on the phone, outages for up to an hour or more every few days. Inflexibility of our ability to replace the router with another one as few, handle the obscure interface that Sky use to restrict a change, so far I have only found the VR2100 I use. Overall they limit what you can do and don't really care.

Having changed from cable I was a little apprehensive. Problem free so have had no reason to contact them. Reliable and very satisfied. Typical 38.8 download, 10 upload. Suits us.
