If you are fed up with rising costs, poor support or slow lines then Zen often comes up as the alternative worth checking out. Zenwas one of the earlier smaller operators but has grown to be one of the smaller "big" players. They have five years of being a Which? Recommend Broadband provider and are a Certified B-Corp. They provide both Openreach-based products as well as various altnets.

Additional Comments

The offer is straightforward. Zen delivers fibre broadband across the UK via major networks like Openreach and CityFibre, along with smaller altnets Trooli and Freedom Fibre. Where full‑fibre (FTTP) is available they have broadband packages that give strong speeds and decent upload rates, which is useful for streaming, working from home or heavy usage households. Many customers report that once the fibre broadband service is live the connection feels stable and performs well. Their award‑winning status in several reviews shows that the company ticks the boxes for value, speed and service in many cases.

Where Zen really stands out is support, excellent customer service and transparency. Reviewers often mention that calls are answered quickly by UK‑based staff who know what they are doing. Issues are handled without a lot of back and forth and installations tend to be clean. For people who have had frustrating experiences with larger ISPs, that personal touch makes a difference. The fact that Zen keeps its pricing clear and avoids hidden extras is another plus.

That said, it is not flawless. Coverage remains the key issue. Although Zen Internet works across much of the UK, the exact speed and availability at your address may differ. Also, even if a fibre line comes to your door you still need a solid internal setup. If your router is old, Wi‑Fi signal is weak or you have a large house with thick walls, you might not see the full benefit. Some users report that in rarer fault situations support could be slower than ideal and that communication when build work drags on might not feel as smooth as expected.

Price is another area to check carefully. Zen’s plans tend to cost a little more than some budget providers because you are paying for stronger support and service. If you prioritise lowest cost above everything else then you might find cheaper alternatives. It is wise to check contract length, renewal pricing, what is included and what happens if you move or need to change provider. Zen however do offer a Contract Price Promise - this means that there are no incontract price rises, and you will pay the same amount for the full length of your contract term, with no unexpected price rises.

Moved to Zen over 3 years ago after being with talk talk which was a disaster. Originally on fttc, now on fttp 900Mb. They are the best provider I've been with and I've never had a problem.

At the end of August 2023 I had a glitch with my FTTP connection from BT which was fixed very quickly. Response and communication from ZEN were highly satisfactory.

Fantastic broadband service. Customer service is awesome. Keep up the great work.

We've had excellent fibre broadband service from Zen over the last few years, but in the last month the service degraded to no service at all for prolonged periods. It was made worse by Zen and Openreach batting the problem back and forward between them instead of getting on with correcting the fault. This experience has badly shaken my faith in Zen as a broadband provider.

Recently the service has reduced to diabolical. Service will not stay up at 40mB/s and drops to 30 or less. Zens test on their Portal seems to have atime error of 1 hour and my telephone is barely usable because of the crackling noise and quiet line test. The Portal test also shows the test PASS with the service speed of 21.2Mbps down and 8.2Mbps up. Reported (with difficulty yesterday by telephone) and found a queue and after A while a recorded message said someone would ring me back - that was over 24 hours ago still waiting - same problem with different router/filters etc direct from Test socket.

I am very satisfied with Zen Internet after upgradng to Zen FTTP 300 bps and VOIP in January 2023. There was one hiccup which Zen quickly and efficiently traced to the Openreach exchange. I am reaching the promised line speeds. There have been no issues since.

I got FTTP 300 and VOIP in January 2023. In May 2023 I had a "hard down" and was without internet and landline for 3 days. Zen Technical Support were excellent in tracing the fault to the exchange. The TBB Speedtest on my laptop shows a download speed of about 140 Mbps. I put the speed degradation down to the relative positions of the Fritzbox router in the kitchen and my laptop which I use mostly on the dining table whereby the Wi-Fi must overcome interference and physical obstructions. Overall I am very satisfied with Zen.

This month I had a "hard down". I was without my 300 Mbps FTTP connection for several days. Zen Technical Support were excellent in tracing the problem back to the exchange. The comparatively low download speeds shown by the TBB Speedtest are due to the relative positions of my Fritzbox router (in the kitchen) and my laptop (on the dining room table where I mostly use it). The signal arriving at the laptop (about 140 Mbps is fit for my purpose though clearly below the speed entering the premises. I put the speed degradation down to interference and physical obstacles. Overall I am very satisfied with Zen.
