Zen Internet

Summary

Zen Internet is one of the UK’s more trusted independent broadband providers. For over 30 years they have focused on delivering reliable service, strong technical support and clean pricing. If you are fed up with rising costs, poor support or slow lines then Zen often comes up as the alternative worth checking out. Zenwas one of the earlier smaller operators but has grown to be one of the smaller "big" players. They have five years of being a Which? Recommend Broadband provider and are a Certified B-Corp. They provide both Openreach-based products as well as various altnets.

Additional Comments

The offer is straightforward. Zen delivers fibre broadband across the UK via major networks like Openreach and CityFibre, along with smaller altnets Trooli and Freedom Fibre. Where full‑fibre (FTTP) is available they have broadband packages that give strong speeds and decent upload rates, which is useful for streaming, working from home or heavy usage households. Many customers report that once the fibre broadband service is live the connection feels stable and performs well. Their award‑winning status in several reviews shows that the company ticks the boxes for value, speed and service in many cases.

Where Zen really stands out is support, excellent customer service and transparency. Reviewers often mention that calls are answered quickly by UK‑based staff who know what they are doing. Issues are handled without a lot of back and forth and installations tend to be clean. For people who have had frustrating experiences with larger ISPs, that personal touch makes a difference. The fact that Zen keeps its pricing clear and avoids hidden extras is another plus.

That said, it is not flawless. Coverage remains the key issue. Although Zen Internet works across much of the UK, the exact speed and availability at your address may differ. Also, even if a fibre line comes to your door you still need a solid internal setup. If your router is old, Wi‑Fi signal is weak or you have a large house with thick walls, you might not see the full benefit. Some users report that in rarer fault situations support could be slower than ideal and that communication when build work drags on might not feel as smooth as expected.

Price is another area to check carefully. Zen’s plans tend to cost a little more than some budget providers because you are paying for stronger support and service. If you prioritise lowest cost above everything else then you might find cheaper alternatives. It is wise to check contract length, renewal pricing, what is included and what happens if you move or need to change provider. Zen however do offer a Contract Price Promise - this means that there are no incontract price rises, and you will pay the same amount for the full length of your contract term, with no unexpected price rises.

Zen Internet have been a great provider. For 18 months speeds exceeded expectation, however for the last 6 months the service supplied via Openreach has suffered from periods of erratic slow speeds. Neighbours have also suffered from issues with Openreach. As my current contract with Zen has ended its term I have decided to stay with Zen but switch to CityFibre as their supplier.

They aren’t the company they used to be I’m on week three of an ongoing issue, which is the second in the space of four weeks. The first was resolved relatively quickly delayed by the fact it was new year. This time however, while theirs an MSO declared by openreach which is impacting my service Zens responses have left a lot to be desired, from not following their own processes to lecturing a customer on the need for backup connectivity while telling them they can normally provide some form of 4g connectivity, but have no stock, so would recommend I speak to sales. I feel like the moment they see MSO states they just stop caring. The constant blaming of openreach is also not a great look. I’d expect their support teams to at least provide better updates than ‘theirs an engineer due tomorrow’ on a nearly daily basis. Doesn’t help that when they can’t reach you by phone they don’t always email updates leaving the customer to chase them - something which has been a nearly daily occurrence. Or that you can no longer speak to a manager and instead have to have a complaint raised which goes untouched for the duration of the issue. They’re fine when things work. They’re fine when things are simple. The second things get complex, they lack the interest or expertise to bother these days. Really not the company they once were and definitely not the company I used to work for.

I've only had Zen full Fibre for two weeks and so far it is 100% reliable, I've not had to contact customer services so I cannot rate CS.

After recent download speeds of less that 200 Mbps on my 300 Mbps plan I reran the speed test. It's still below 200 Mbps.

I am disappointed lately to achieve less than 200 Mbps on my 300 Mps plan. What's going on?

Full internet capability, full speed up and down, ipv6 at no extra cost, static ip. Just brilliant

I've only had Zen since Monday (6 days) but so far I am very impressed, the installation was fantastic, I live in a first-floor flat and the cable was connected overhead via the existing telegraph pole in the street, so there was no digging of my downstairs neighbour's garden. The speed tests that I have carried out are more than 850mbps, I have the full fibre 900mbps package. I've not had to call customer service as yet so I am unable to comment on CS.

I've been a customer of Zen for a number of years on both FTTC and more recently FTTP. During both of those contractual periods my payments have remained constant, and indeed the FTTP service (at 500 Mbps) with phone service is slightly cheaper than the previous FTTC service. I've only had a couple of problems through the many years I've been with Zen and these have been handled with professionalism and solved as reasonably quickly as good be expected in one case with compensation for a few days of loss of service (due to an OpenReach issue) and in the second case by rapid provision of a replacement router. The internet and phone service have both been very reliable.

Have just moved to Olilo but would still recommend Zen if suitable. See he has always been great and customer support excellent.

Their support is extremely good. Nice lads and lasses with a northern accent who will offer great help.
