TalkTalk

Summary

TalkTalk is a name most people in the UK will recognise when it comes to fibre broadband. It offers a range that goes from basic fibre connection through to full fibre where available, and it positions itself firmly at the value end of the market. For a lot of households the appeal is clear. You get a well known brand, straightforward pricing, a reliable connection, and enough speed for streaming, browsing, video calls and general day to day use without spending a fortune.

Additional Comments

When everything lines up, TalkTalk broadband provides a solid fibre broadband connection. Many customers get stable speeds that suit everyday needs, and the service is simple to set up in most homes. Because TalkTalk uses multiple underlying networks including Openreach and several full fibre partners, you may find good availability even in places where other providers are limited. For casual streaming, schoolwork, online shopping and TV catch up, it usually does the job.

That said, there are a few things worth keeping in mind. The biggest potential issue is customer service. Reviews often mention long wait times, support that can feel hit and miss and issues taking longer than expected to sort. TalkTalk’s ratings for reliability and support tend to sit below some of the other major providers. If you are happy with a lower cost option and only need the basics to run smoothly most of the time, it can work well enough. If you work from home, rely heavily on your connection or you cannot afford interruptions, you may want to compare other options first.

It is also sensible to check what happens when your contract ends. TalkTalk broadband is known for promoting attractive starter prices, but once your initial deal finishes the cost can rise. Taking a moment to understand your renewal rate and any price promise is a good idea. Take a look at our best broadband deals page for discounts. As always, the speed you sign up for refers to the line into your home. What you actually experience depends on Wi-Fi strength, the layout of your property and the quality of your equipment. Larger houses or those with thick walls may need stronger internal Wi-Fi setups to get the best from the broadband connection.

TalkTalk broadband suits people who want a simple broadband option at a fair price and do not need the highest level of support. It offers good value on the right deal and can handle the normal mix of streaming, browsing and work tasks for most homes. If you prefer a provider with stronger satisfaction scores or guaranteed support response times, then it is worth exploring alternatives. But for many households looking for a budget friendly fibre broadband service without too much fuss, TalkTalk broadband remains a sensible choice.

After hiccoughs earlier in the year, we are getting the speed we are paying for. However, competitors are offering better deals, will move when contract ends. Customer service appalling!!!

Patchy service but am getting 30+ (v 37 published) but short term line drops are becoming more frequent and annoying. Customer service has been pretty poor for me but I have stuck with AOL?talk Talk for a number of years. However, I do like the challenge of negotiating contract renewals!

Talktalk has known for some years that the underlying infrastructure (old aluminium telephone wiring of over 1 km distance), which it refuses to acknowledge, makes it impossible to achieve the speeds which it has claimed are actually achievable at this house (and adjoining houses in this neighbourhood). It seems unwilling and/or unable to insist that the infrastructure is improved - actually finding out how this can be done is beyond me - and will offer some level of compensation and penalty-less exit - but this is not what we want. As a service, otherwise, we have no complaints about its reliability and dependability but the so-called customer service is poor. Clearly the problem of infrastructure is not within their immediate control to change but they could have made far more effort to be honest with customers and to improve things.

I am having to periodically reboot the super-fast TT router. Do not get the advertised speed, but who dose.
jonial 20 Oct 2019 (reviewed 6 years ago)
Regrettably Talktalk have seen fit to cap my download speed fron its 40 Meg to 35 Meg. It had been consistently a 40 M since I took up the FTTG service but about 6 weeks ago the speed has been restricted to 35M. Not a happy chappy
