TalkTalk

Summary

TalkTalk is a name most people in the UK will recognise when it comes to fibre broadband. It offers a range that goes from basic fibre connection through to full fibre where available, and it positions itself firmly at the value end of the market. For a lot of households the appeal is clear. You get a well known brand, straightforward pricing, a reliable connection, and enough speed for streaming, browsing, video calls and general day to day use without spending a fortune.

Additional Comments

When everything lines up, TalkTalk broadband provides a solid fibre broadband connection. Many customers get stable speeds that suit everyday needs, and the service is simple to set up in most homes. Because TalkTalk uses multiple underlying networks including Openreach and several full fibre partners, you may find good availability even in places where other providers are limited. For casual streaming, schoolwork, online shopping and TV catch up, it usually does the job.

That said, there are a few things worth keeping in mind. The biggest potential issue is customer service. Reviews often mention long wait times, support that can feel hit and miss and issues taking longer than expected to sort. TalkTalk’s ratings for reliability and support tend to sit below some of the other major providers. If you are happy with a lower cost option and only need the basics to run smoothly most of the time, it can work well enough. If you work from home, rely heavily on your connection or you cannot afford interruptions, you may want to compare other options first.

It is also sensible to check what happens when your contract ends. TalkTalk broadband is known for promoting attractive starter prices, but once your initial deal finishes the cost can rise. Taking a moment to understand your renewal rate and any price promise is a good idea. Take a look at our best broadband deals page for discounts. As always, the speed you sign up for refers to the line into your home. What you actually experience depends on Wi-Fi strength, the layout of your property and the quality of your equipment. Larger houses or those with thick walls may need stronger internal Wi-Fi setups to get the best from the broadband connection.

TalkTalk broadband suits people who want a simple broadband option at a fair price and do not need the highest level of support. It offers good value on the right deal and can handle the normal mix of streaming, browsing and work tasks for most homes. If you prefer a provider with stronger satisfaction scores or guaranteed support response times, then it is worth exploring alternatives. But for many households looking for a budget friendly fibre broadband service without too much fuss, TalkTalk broadband remains a sensible choice.

The main problem I have with TalkTalk is reliability of connection. There are occasions when it is very slow and sometimes it drops complteley. I am on a 67M (FTTC) product but sometimes we still get buffering during streaming. On the 67M product we get about 45M. When I was on the 38M product with a paid for "boost" to 65M I used to get over 50M, but that combination was "upgraded" to 67M. Where has the speed gone? Support is terrible unless you are lucky enough to speak to a UK based agent, and my neighbours have similar problems with their ISP. Why stay with them? I pay half of what my neighbour pays for BT and they have similar technical problems. I think the problem is the final copper infrastructure and no ISP has the incentive to put pressure on OpenReach to fix it. They just want people to pay more and upgrade to FTTP - there are already 2 rival fibres (OpenReach and Fibre Heroes) outside our house but no ISP is offering a competitive connection.

I HAD BEEN WITH TALKtALK AND ITS PREVIOUS INCARNATIONS FOR OVER 20 YEARS AND THEY WERE NOT INTERESTED INTO GETTING ME ON FIBRE BROADBAND. WHEREAS BT WERE. SINCE THEN MY SPEEDS WITH BT HAVE BEEN ASTRONOMICAL 26 X UPLOAD IMPROVEMENT AND 14 X DOWNLOAD IMPROVEMENT FOR A £10 A MONTH CHEAPER COMPARED WITH TT.

Desperately poor handling of upgrade from ADSL to Fibre. Upgrade failed twice as two routers failed to operate correctly (routers were not operating at advertised guaranteed speeds and could not provide a sustained WiFi connection). The routers had each in turn to be replaced. Three engineer call-outs were required for which TalkTalk attempted to charge me £135. I was eventually refunded the costs of the call-outs. Having signed up to a new contract I subsequently discovered that TalkTalk had curtailed some its offers, despite the initial written assurance that their offers would remain in place for the duration of the new contract. I knew that TalkTalk were not renown for their customer service but I never imagined that it would be so bad.

I don't know what I am doing right but compared to some of the reviews I am more than happy with TalkTalk. I have been with them on the advice of a work colleague since they were Tiscali and I have not regretted it. In a Greater Manchester suburb we consistently get 35/38 download and twixt 6 and 7 upload which is what we pay for with Fibre 35. The word is 'consistent' and they seem to be marginally less expensive than other suppliers.

We recently moved from CB259JG to CB259NQ a distance of less than 3 miles. The reliability at CB259JG (a small village) was outstanding - I don't remember the Internet going down. At the new address CB25 9NQ, the Internet drops out at least once a day. Sometimes it comes back by itself, other times you have to reboot the router, I have been with talktalk at my previous address for 10-15 years. After 3 months at the new address I intend to find a more reliable Internet provider.

Service is generally good, but goes off about twice a month. The off time can be anything between a few minutes, and a few hours usually after midnight. Is it likely that TalkTalk are doing work on the system, but they never let their customers know about it.

Broadband ok,but customer service is dire.Despite several complaints over many months still cannot get a full breakdown of my bill.
