TalkTalk

Summary

TalkTalk is a name most people in the UK will recognise when it comes to fibre broadband. It offers a range that goes from basic fibre connection through to full fibre where available, and it positions itself firmly at the value end of the market. For a lot of households the appeal is clear. You get a well known brand, straightforward pricing, a reliable connection, and enough speed for streaming, browsing, video calls and general day to day use without spending a fortune.

Additional Comments

When everything lines up, TalkTalk broadband provides a solid fibre broadband connection. Many customers get stable speeds that suit everyday needs, and the service is simple to set up in most homes. Because TalkTalk uses multiple underlying networks including Openreach and several full fibre partners, you may find good availability even in places where other providers are limited. For casual streaming, schoolwork, online shopping and TV catch up, it usually does the job.

That said, there are a few things worth keeping in mind. The biggest potential issue is customer service. Reviews often mention long wait times, support that can feel hit and miss and issues taking longer than expected to sort. TalkTalk’s ratings for reliability and support tend to sit below some of the other major providers. If you are happy with a lower cost option and only need the basics to run smoothly most of the time, it can work well enough. If you work from home, rely heavily on your connection or you cannot afford interruptions, you may want to compare other options first.

It is also sensible to check what happens when your contract ends. TalkTalk broadband is known for promoting attractive starter prices, but once your initial deal finishes the cost can rise. Taking a moment to understand your renewal rate and any price promise is a good idea. Take a look at our best broadband deals page for discounts. As always, the speed you sign up for refers to the line into your home. What you actually experience depends on Wi-Fi strength, the layout of your property and the quality of your equipment. Larger houses or those with thick walls may need stronger internal Wi-Fi setups to get the best from the broadband connection.

TalkTalk broadband suits people who want a simple broadband option at a fair price and do not need the highest level of support. It offers good value on the right deal and can handle the normal mix of streaming, browsing and work tasks for most homes. If you prefer a provider with stronger satisfaction scores or guaranteed support response times, then it is worth exploring alternatives. But for many households looking for a budget friendly fibre broadband service without too much fuss, TalkTalk broadband remains a sensible choice.

I've been done by TalkTalk. They offered to reduce my monthly bill, or maintain my payments but deliver an improved service, "IF" I stayed with them at the end of my contract. The broadband speed is generally good, when it is not OFF. The improved service has not happened, and I pay more now than before. The service although fast, is up and down like a yoyo. I've also just received a bill for £25 for a mobile telephone call, which I was not aware of. I know this is my own fault for not monitoring this type of call, so I'm not blaming TalkTalk for this. I would caution others to stay away from TalkTalk, since they cannot be trusted to deliver what they promise, and there is no customer service to speak of. I will not renew my contract with them again.

When you can't make or receive calls for 5 days, they should automatically give you compensation, but they don't. You have to ask for it and go through a tortuous process to get it.

reliable service with good speeds

This is UW-provided broadband - very happy with it, we have had it for over 7 years, speed is what they said we would get and there has been a price REDUCTION recently.

Time to leave for a more consistent reliability with another provider.

My phone line was down for 5 days (but I still had half speed broadband). I reported it via a webchat, but the TalkTalk person on the other end said that their system was down and could I sign on in twenty minutes with my QUERY! I said NO. I am reporting a FAULT. I've just had my bill, and no compensation for the 5 days of inclusive calls that I have paid for. I usually give TalkTalk five stars, but not this time. Their customer service is appalling.

On Fibre 35. "guaranteed" 35mbs never get more than 25 if I'm lucky - complain and they do nothing about it. We could get UPP FOR THE SAME MONEY and much much faster.

TalkTalk is fine as long as you don't have to contact them for any reason. The broadband service is pretty reliable, and the one time I had to actually have an engineer round to fix a problem he was very good. But every year I have to call them to renegotiate my plan and it's a nightmare. They take forever. Customer Services is rubbish.

A good provider with whom I have "stuck" for four renewed contracts, despite being prepared to change for a better deal. In reality, T/Talk have consistently renewed my contract at a better rate than the one before, with my current 18mth deal giving fast (38Mb) B/band and free "anytime" calls to landlines and UK mobiles at a total cost of £20/month. Be prepared to haggle! Issues...the occasional "dropping" of the b/band signal for a few seconds - unsure whether the cause is internal or external.
