Sky

Summary

Sky Broadband is one of the most recognisable broadband providers in the UK. It is part of the larger Sky group and offers a wide range of services from standard broadband through fibre to full-fibre broadband service options. Because of its size and reach you will find it available in many areas. If you are already a Sky TV or Sky Mobile customer then the broadband side may feel like a natural extension.

Additional Comments

One of the strengths of Sky Broadband is its broad availability and familiar brand. Because the company has been operating for many years it has solid support processes, many package choices and regular promotional offers. For a typical household that just wants dependable internet, Sky provides a safe choice. The full-fibre options especially mean you can get very high speeds if your area is covered, in some cases the UK's fastest broadband speeds, which benefits streaming, online gaming and working from home.

However there are a few areas where Sky Broadband tends to fall short of the best-in-class providers. For example, across recent customer satisfaction surveys Sky’s score is moderate rather than exceptional. That means while the service works well for many, you should not assume it will be flawless everywhere. Reliability and speed tend to depend heavily on your local infrastructure and how far you are from network points. Some users report slower speeds or occasional drop-outs. Home Wi-Fi setups can also limit what you actually experience, despite having a fast line.

Another factor to keep in mind is cost and contract terms. Sky offers good deals (view our best broadband deals page for more), especially if you bundle TV and fibre broadband together, but once the initial promotional period ends your monthly fee can rise. Checking the renewal terms and what happens after your contract finishes is wise. Also you may be tied into a longer contract (for example 24 months) which limits your flexibility if you want to move or change provider. Equipment wise the router and Wi-Fi gear supplied by Sky do the job in many homes. If you have a large house or need strong coverage across multiple floors you may still want to upgrade internally with a better router or Wi-Fi mesh system.

Feedback on the support provided to Sky Broadband customers is mixed. Many say that issues get sorted and support staff are professional, but others report delays, long wait times or frustrations when resolving complex problems. One thing that does help is the fact that Sky’s broadband business is mature and the company has resources to support maintenance, upgrades and network investment. That gives a level of confidence. If you value brand stability and broad coverage then Sky is a strong contender.

If you are considering Sky Broadband you should check your exact address for the real speed you will likely get, ask about any installation or equipment fees, check what the monthly price will be after the initial deal ends, and consider your internal Wi-Fi setup. If you live in an area with full-fibre broadband availability it could be a very good fit.

With FTTC and my cabinet 17 halfway to the exchange I should be getting ~30Mbs however although my router shows 29.924Mbs I very rarely get above 25Mbs indeed for weeks I was lucky to get above 20Mbs. I did notice during this period that my latency would be up in the several hundreds. There has been a considerable improvement after I mentioned this on Twitter using @skybroadband.

Despite having FTTC my download speed is consistently below 20Mbs and at weekends drops to single figures with very high latency. Reporting to Sky results in the usual script crap and no change.

Sky Down HTTPx6 Down HTTPx1 Upstream 15.58 Mbps 11.15 Mbps 0.46 Mbps Be Unlimited was much better... 15.15 Mbps 15.05 Mbps 1.12 Mbps I wish I was still with Be Unlimited! Looking at the log of speed test reveals that Sky is constantly reducing my upstream speed ;(

So far so good, changed channels on router with them which improved broadband strength around the whole house. Seems good with so many devices attached to it. Speeds good but issue with reliability (see above) Not as good as BT but cheaper deal. I would recommend Sky Fibre.

Disappointing speed. Sky’s own app offers speed testing but will only state speed is not what it should be and for me to contact them. Presently I cannot give a day for them to attend to send an engineer again. His last recent visit established the speed at the router was at the bottom or below the lowest limit of their claimed fibre optic speed. His suggestion of a faulty router - which has subsequently been replaced by Sky - hasn’t fixed the difficulty. There has been a drop-off in speed since his visit boosted it, with the result that speeds tested through the thinkbroadband speed tester (not recognised by Sky) were 11 - 16Mbps against claimed 27 - 40Mbps. I have been with Sky only 5 weeks. Currently unable to give up the required 1/2 day Monday to Friday to give an Engineer access so am led to believe that there’s no resolution till that happens. Last Engineer’s visit stated all was ok in the house. Frustrated.

My Sky Broadband has been very reliable for years [although very slow] but during the last 3 Months I keep getting various error messages on my browsers when I turn on my Computer all basically stating `No Internet Connection`. However I had been connected to the Internet because either my Sky TV was on and able to download TV programs or my Amazon Echo - `Alexa` was playing a Radio station on most of those occasions. I know that those points indicate something malfunctioning with my Computer`s connection to the Internet but nothing has ever been detected during `troubleshooting` a non-connection. I have tried 3 different browsers each time with a similar Error message on all of them - after a period of time which varies in length from day to day one of the browsers will connect to the Internet - but this can take between a few minutes and an Hour. This almost daily unreliability is obviously really irritating me but I know from previous experience with `intermittent connection problems` that Sky will not be able to do anything about it. My download `Speed` is diabolical at approximately only 2.5Mbps which I found out is in `the lowest 1% in the UK` - this has never been any better over the past 10 years. I don`t live out in a rural area miles away from a B.T. Telephone Exchange - I live in South London only about 1.5 miles from a B.T. Telephone Exchange. Sky has changed my router a couple of times - I have been on the `Sky Hub` for 5 or 6 years - none of the router changes have ever improved my Broadband download speed. Chris
