Sky

Summary

Sky Broadband is one of the most recognisable broadband providers in the UK. It is part of the larger Sky group and offers a wide range of services from standard broadband through fibre to full-fibre broadband service options. Because of its size and reach you will find it available in many areas. If you are already a Sky TV or Sky Mobile customer then the broadband side may feel like a natural extension.

Additional Comments

One of the strengths of Sky Broadband is its broad availability and familiar brand. Because the company has been operating for many years it has solid support processes, many package choices and regular promotional offers. For a typical household that just wants dependable internet, Sky provides a safe choice. The full-fibre options especially mean you can get very high speeds if your area is covered, in some cases the UK's fastest broadband speeds, which benefits streaming, online gaming and working from home.

However there are a few areas where Sky Broadband tends to fall short of the best-in-class providers. For example, across recent customer satisfaction surveys Sky’s score is moderate rather than exceptional. That means while the service works well for many, you should not assume it will be flawless everywhere. Reliability and speed tend to depend heavily on your local infrastructure and how far you are from network points. Some users report slower speeds or occasional drop-outs. Home Wi-Fi setups can also limit what you actually experience, despite having a fast line.

Another factor to keep in mind is cost and contract terms. Sky offers good deals (view our best broadband deals page for more), especially if you bundle TV and fibre broadband together, but once the initial promotional period ends your monthly fee can rise. Checking the renewal terms and what happens after your contract finishes is wise. Also you may be tied into a longer contract (for example 24 months) which limits your flexibility if you want to move or change provider. Equipment wise the router and Wi-Fi gear supplied by Sky do the job in many homes. If you have a large house or need strong coverage across multiple floors you may still want to upgrade internally with a better router or Wi-Fi mesh system.

Feedback on the support provided to Sky Broadband customers is mixed. Many say that issues get sorted and support staff are professional, but others report delays, long wait times or frustrations when resolving complex problems. One thing that does help is the fact that Sky’s broadband business is mature and the company has resources to support maintenance, upgrades and network investment. That gives a level of confidence. If you value brand stability and broad coverage then Sky is a strong contender.

If you are considering Sky Broadband you should check your exact address for the real speed you will likely get, ask about any installation or equipment fees, check what the monthly price will be after the initial deal ends, and consider your internal Wi-Fi setup. If you live in an area with full-fibre broadband availability it could be a very good fit.

My Sky Broadband `speed`averages only about 2.7Mbps which I found out from this excellent website is amongst the lowest 1% of Broadband speed in the UK. I live in SE London about 2 miles from the nearest BT Telephone Exchange but I have friends who live in the very rural Highlands of Scotland who have faster Broadband download speeds ! I can usually just about stream TV and Films without too much buffering depending on whether they are being viewed at really heavy internet demand periods. When I have previously contacted Sky about trying to get much faster download speeds they have just supplied newer Routers / Hubs which have never improved my `Speeds`. When I look at a Map showing the average Broadband download speeds in my Home`s immediate area other Homes are shown to be getting 10 or 20 times the download speed that I get. As Sky must be in the top 3 largest Broadband providers in the UK and I live in London I find this disgraceful. But because I don`t have any big problems downolading or streaming and I have Broadband and TV from Sky and have been a customer for the last 23 years I have not felt the need to change providers. However Sky have increased their prices for TV and Broadband so much in the last 5 - 6 years I am definitely thinking of dropping their TV subscription. Chris

Been with Sky b/b and TV for over 10 years. Every few years I upgraded to a faster b/b. Currently on Fibre to the premises with stated speed of 150 and guaranteed 100. New installation from BT telegraph post straight to the router inside the house. Speeds in next room to router vary between 35 and 75 depending on time of day. So much for the hype about Fibre.

I have had Sky Broadband for about 13 years now and it has hardly ever produced more than 3Mbps download speed on any speed test. I have done many speed tests on here and without actually adding up all the results and dividing them buy the number of tests I would guess just from viewing the list of results that the average has been about 2.5 Mbps. That has not really bothered me in the past because I only used the Internet for Sky+ TV plus Emailing and online shopping but in the last 4 years I have upgraded all of our TV`s to smart TV`s so now have more facilities for streaming TV programs and Films. if we are trying to stream programs or films on 2 TV`s at the same time it is usually not possible without a lot of buffering. It would be better to have perhaps at least 10 Mbps Broadband download speed but that is not possible at my Home with Sky Broadband - they have previously tried to improve it by replacing a previous router with their most up to date `Hub` but there was no improvement at all in the download speed. I have not been bothered enough with the 2.5Mbps download `speed` to change Broadband provider but Speed test information on here has indicated that my Sky Broadband speed is `in the lowest 1% in the UK` and as I live in SE London not out in a rural area miles away from a BT Telephone Exchange Centre I think that is disgraceful !
