Anglesey set for WiMAX 4G trial

Ynys Môn (Isle of Anglesey) looks set to benefit from a WiMAX 4G rural
broadband solution initially offering broadband at speeds of up to 10Mbps. The
i3 Group
who are better known for their fibre to the home initiative FibreCity are
behind the trial.

The project will make use of the fibre backbone announced for North Wales almost two years
ago. An initial trial connecting 300 homes in Aberffraw, Llanfair-yn-Neubwll
and Bryngwran will see the service delivery handled by Carrier Wales.
Businesses and residents in the area will be informed once the trial is
available, so no rushing off to find a sign-up page yet. On enquiring about a
time-line, it appears to be fairly short, with first properties getting
connected in perhaps six weeks.

It should be borne in mind that this is a trial roll-out. As ever the trial
will test both the technology and costs of providing a broadband solution that
exceeds the proposed 2015 Universal Service Commitment. In this sense the work
of the Welsh Assembly puts Wales ahead of the curve, with previous funding
announcements of £2m to fill in not-spots in the final-third.
