BeFibre now available in Brightlingsea

BeFibre sent out a press release on Tuesday saying that the first customer has gone live as part of the Digital Infrastructure roll-out in Brightlingsea.

Having a house full, with four children aged between three and eighteen, the prospect of a full fibre connection was very exciting and seemed a little too good to be true. However, we’ve been consistently getting speeds of between 820 and 900 Mbps for over a month now and had no issues whatsoever.

The installation process was simple too, the engineer visited at the end of the previous week to run the fibre cable from the telegraph pole to the external wall. From here, all they had left to do was run the cable internally, install the ONT on the wall, and plug in the Linksys router — a speed test was also run upon completion and the engineer connected our devices too.

An idea of the timescale between announcement of an area and first people actually enjoying the speeds is given in that Brightlingsea was announced as a Digital Infrastructure destination in November 2020 and its now August 2023.

We don’t know how far the roll-out will reach across Brightlingsea, what we have mapped so far is 1,283 premises that can order and be connected in short order, there are perhaps a couple of hundred premises where we see pre-orders are possible but we don’t feature those on the maps. Digital Infrastructure (who run BeFibre) say that the connection in Red Barn Road is the first of around 3,000 residents that will be able to get a connection, the exchange covering Brightlingsea covers some 4,100 premises, which if 10% are businesss premises means around 3,700 homes which would be something like 7,000 residents. If BeFibre do really mean 3,000 residents, which is around 1,500 homes, the 1,283 premises found by us so far plus the pre-order addresses means the end of the roll-out is almost there. There are some small parts of Brightlingsea left to finish checking.
