When is an ‘offer’ not an offer?

It’s not unusual for broadband provides to have some packages on offer. Once the offer ends, the package returns to the original price and often another package may be put on offer. It’s quite similar to how carpet stores (or fitted kitchens) always have some carpets on sale, and you’d never want to buy a carpet which wasn’t on sale; just wait a few weeks when your preferred selection will be on sale.

Broadband isn’t quite as bad as the home furniture and improvement but it’s normal for broadband providers to switch offers.

We are trying to understand the Gigaclear 400 October offer as we can’t see how it is any better than the non-offer price in September? Can you?

(Apologies for the font on the captions; we will be fixing this soon)

The September offer was the Ultrafast 500 package (469Mbps) for £24/month. The Ultrafast 400 package (400Mbps) was £22/month without an offer label.

At the beginning of October the site was updated. The Ultrafast 500 package was now £26/month and the Ultrafast 400 package was flagged as an offer, albeit the price remained £22/month.

Other than expecting a price increase at the end of the offer, we’re not quite sure how this stacks up. Maybe someone can spot a missing small print that might be an offer? If it’s not, we think this might be a breach of CAP Code 3.1.

We have asked Gigaclear but have yet to receive a reply.

  1. The only thing I can see is no activation fee in the small print on the 400 offer?

    • They moved that to the bit below (not shown):
“All our packages have a £30 activation fee and free standard installation”
..so I don’t think that’s it but good spot.

  2. Very strange, the 500Mb/s offer seems to be £2 cheaper, or am I missing something? The 400 is certainly not good.
I wonder if it was a mistake.
Gigaclear is a pretty good provider, my partner has it, and it has been flawless, but something is not right about the above.

    • The images aren’t 100% clear how we included the as the captions are obscured. The left two are the “September” offer and the right two are the “October” offer.
So the pricing for 400 and 500Mbps was £22 and £24 in September and £22 and £26 in October. i.e. the offer on 500Mbps ended but the 400Mbps is flagged as an offer despite being at the same price.

(500Mbps being the reference to Ultrafast 500 even though they mrket it at 469Mbps)
