Low latency BBC iPlayer streaming enters new phase
The BBC has expanded its beta of low-latency streaming, aimed at reducing the delay on streaming platforms (iPlayer is around 40 seconds vs 8-10seconds for broadcast TV). Low-latency streaming makes it harder to avoid stalling and rebuffering, but makes for a better viewing experience, particularly when watching live sports or programs with a social media following.
I live in Paisley and am with Fleur Telecom. The Internet was at 16 Mbts until July of this year when it was reduced to 11 Mtbs. Since Saturday 6th September it reduced to between 1 and 2 Mbts and on some days it went off altogether. I have been in touch with Fleur Telecom several times who tell me that there is an outage somewhere, and can’t tell me where, but today a week and a half later, it briefly went to 6 Mbts and only just does email. They keep giving me excuses but my speeds are no better. They also offer no reduction in cost to compensate. They don’t seem to be able to monitor the speeds from the Thornly Park Paisley Telephone Exchange. Their service lately has been appalling. There has been no mention of outages in Scotland on your website.
