Work has been announced to start on another 12 exchanges that will eventually allow Openreach to vacate the exchange building completely.
Engineering changes are set to start in Q3 2025/2026 i.e. in 12 months time and expecting to take place over the nine to twelve months. The rough dates are given so that communication providers still using the exchanges or have services running via them can get their plans in order. Exact dates and times will be shared with providers with 28 days notice given.
The twelve exchanges are:
- Staines
- Thames Ditton
- Baynard
- Wraysbury
- Nazeing
- Langford
- Allestree Park
- Beacon
- Childwall
- Lundin Links
- Carrickfergus
- Glengormley
The bulk of VDSL2 and Openreach FTTP services will be unaffected as invariably they will already be connected to one of around 1,200 handover exchanges that will remain once the exchange closure programme has completed in a number of years.
Three pilot exchanges namely Kenton Road, Deddington and Ballyclare are a lot further down the exit path. The final product switch off at the Kenton Road exchange is expected by the end of November 2025.
What is actually at Baynard House these days?
I can’t remember what ended up where, after the Baynard/Faraday/Wood-Street exchange consolidation programme.
Wood Street ATE was demolished of course.
I thought all of the frames ended up in the Faraday Building, but I might be mistaken, since it was all about 20 years ago now.
Oh the joys of getting old … with a failing memory.
