EXCLUSIVE: Insights into current Project Gigabit contract activity

DSIT has published its own analysis of what the various Project Gigabit contracts delivered in the period April 2024 to December 2024. We believe we can do better in terms of indicating what is going on much more recently.

We are using the Open Data that was released by DSIT as part of its Open Market Review in January 2025 and then have cross referenced this with the footprint data that we are updating daily for the Project Gigabit suppliers and all the other commercial rollouts. In this dive into what we are seeing the focus is on postcodes where the majority of premises have a Project Gigabit Status of initial deployment, i.e. contract assigned and its highly likely premises will see full fibre deployed in the contract term.

We are not looking at the Giga Hubs or vouchers assigned, what we will say is the one Giga Hub contract we spent a few hours cross referencing did seem to have delivered. The one problem being that while the hub address was served very little so far had happened in the surrounding properties.

Our insight is not going to line up exactly with DSIT data and may even disagree with what providers say, due to the many variables involved, but hopefully it will provide some oversight of what is happening. The aim is to try and reproduce this summary on a monthly basis which will show any progress at a much earlier point than the official figures.

The Project Gigabit Status and postcode footprints are of course available on our maps pages. The footprints for the Project Gigabit suppliers are redrawn at least monthly and we also try to ensure the premises level FTTP map is updated once a fortnight.

The Project Gigabit contracts do seem to be delivering but there is a lot of variation, e.g Connexin has seen no movement, but with the acquisition by CityFibre this is likely change in the future.

Freedom Fibre has stepped back from its contracts, even though it is clear some premises did get delivered. These are updated on our Project Gigabit update page.

The level of overbuild in the CityFibre locations is interesting and worrying, this suggests to us that if there is any area to delve deeper into in terms of did Project Gigabit identify premises that needed intervention correctly and whether networks like nexfibre and Openreach actually shared accurate build plans then those contract areas are the ones to start with. Project Gigabit build can be mixed into the same postcode as commercial roll-out, and therefore resolving whether a contract holder gets paid for a premises passed can be costly time wise.

We are working to the assumption that areas where Project Gigabit contracts had delivered ahead of the January 2025 Open Market Review will actually be recorded as grey or black and therefore no part of this analysis.
