Nildram launch ‘central’ firewall service

Nildram have announced a central firewall solution. This option means that users will not have to purchase their own
dedicated firewall hardware nor install make-shift solutions and keep them up-to-date. The service allows you to use port forwarding (e.g. running a mail server) along with various other options.
The central firewall service is ideal for small businesses who often only learn their security lessons when it’s too late. It will however remain to be seen how flexible and easy-to-use the
central firewall system is, and how well the service is supported.

The Nildram ADSL services with the firewall option start from £35.99 (including VAT) and is priced at £6 above the equivalent standard package. It may not replace the functionality of
a dedicated on-site firewall (yet), and I would have hoped that this was to become a standard service for all Nildram customers, but it is understandable that it is marketed at a premium price
for a specific audience to test the market. Nonetheless, as more providers develop these solutions, they will no doubt become standard and more residential users will be encouraged to take
advantage of them. [seb]
