OECD statistics for 2005 published
OECD.Org has released its latest round of statistics that summarise the popularity of broadband around the globe. The last set of data was issued in October 2005.
Those bits that stand out are that, there are 158 million broadband subscriptions by December 2005, and the three of the four countries with the highest penetration rates are in Europe, Iceland, Korea, the Netherlands and Denmark. Each of these has more than 25 subscribers per 100 inhabitants. Iceland leads the pack at 26.7%. The United States is the country with most subscribers at 49 million, which accounts for 31% of the broadband population worldwide, and along with Canada cable subscribers outnumber DSL subscribers.
For those keen to leave the copper local loop behind, it looks like a move to Japan is needed, the country has around 4.6 million fibre subscribers. In Korea fibre based broadband is growing rapidly, resulting in a fall in the number of DSL and cable connections of 3.3% and 1.7% respectively.
