Summary

NOW Broadband service sits under the same umbrella as Sky, but it’s very much its own thing. Where Sky focuses on full TV bundles and higher-end broadband options, NOW goes for simplicity. It’s designed for people who want a straightforward internet connection without being tied into long contracts or paying for features they don’t use.

Additional Comments

Because it runs on the Openreach network, the actual connection quality is much the same as what you’d get from BT, Plusnet, or Sky. You can choose between three main plans: Brilliant Broadband (average 11Mb), Fab Fibre (average 36Mb), and Super Fibre (average 63Mb). These are roughly equivalent to standard and fibre-to-the-cabinet connections, so you’re not getting full fibre speeds yet, but it’s more than enough for most households that stream, browse, and work from home.

One of NOW Broadband’s biggest selling points is flexibility. You can go for a standard 12 month contract if you want to save a few quid, or pay a little extra for a rolling monthly option. That’s quite rare among bigger broadband service providers and makes it handy for students, renters, or anyone who doesn’t want to commit long term.

The setup process is generally smooth. If you’ve already got an Openreach line, switching over tends to be quick, and the supplied router is fine for everyday use, not the most advanced, but it gets the job done. Speeds are consistent, though like most providers on the Openreach network, what you actually get will depend on how close you are to the local cabinet.

NOW’s customer service is handled by Sky’s broadband team, which is one of the more reliable ones in the UK. Wait times can vary, but you’ll usually get a resolution without too much back-and-forth. You don’t get quite the same premium touchpoints as Sky, but you’re also paying less each month, so that’s fair enough.

Where NOW Broadband packages really stand out is value. There aren’t any flashy add-ons or inflated prices after a few months, and you can still bundle in NOW TV memberships if you want access to entertainment, cinema, or sports channels. It’s an optional extra though, which keeps costs low for those who just want the internet.

Living in a rural location we get dreadful download speeds and upload speed is virtually nil, yet we still have to pay premium prices for our service. It isn't right that towns and cities get faster and faster services for much lower cost. NowTv is ok, but service is mediocre and doesn't seem to improve over time. We get much the same speed now as we had 6 or 7 years ago. Our phone line is always very crackly but reporting this never makes any difference. Openreach engineers turn-up, tell us we have an old copper cable (the self-burying type) and the won't replace it so we just have to lump it! As we don't even get a decent mobile signal we need our landline - it's like the telecomms companies think we should just pay over the odds and put up with whatever they deign to provide. NOT HAPPY.

Changed over to Vodafone Fibre service for £10 per month less than from NOW - supposed to go live on 27-Jun-24. Openreach were 1st class, but I did not receive the router from Vodafone until the 30-Jun-24. Vodafone support services were helpful and got things sorted. However, Vodafone are supposed to pay £6.10 per day for every day loss of service. I lost 3 days, so I should get a refund of £18.30, but I have not received anything. The service is supposed to supply Fibre service at >=100 Mbps, but it fluctuates wildly from 100Mbps to <30 Mbps although it is hardly noticeable. I'm generally satisfied with he reliability and speed despite the occasional drop offs. I would still recommend Vodafone because the service has been good up to now. Time wil ltell.

I'm about to change providers from NOW to Vodafone. Nothing wrong with NOW service or reliability but can get fibre and twice the speed for £10 per month less from Vodafone. Why didn't NOW offer this at the same price?

The Problem: My house is 1 mile from the exchange on a horrific mix of copper/aluminium infrastructure and the most upload I can get is around 33Mbps. The Answer: Buy the cheapest, shortest contract on offer for the maximum bandwidth available. NOW TV are on the network Sky rent from OpenReach (same old crap as everyone else) so I get the best of what an unreliable and old mess of cables can offer. God knows what the contention ratio is, but the latency feels awful at time, even under direct Ethernet connection. The aluminium runs are regularly affected by heat, cold and moisture (as told to me by an OpenReach engineer fixing a problem I had a few years ago) and nothing is getting replaced now. The old telephone system is being abandoned so it’s over to a full-fibre to the pole or nothing! I fixed up an EE 5G router for work which was showing on some days, 150Mbps download speeds. I’d love to go to 5G at home but my postcode hasn’t got it yet. Whatever latency associated with 5G connections isn’t noticeable at those sort of speeds. I’m sticking with NOW until my contract expires in October, then…..who knows?

Reliable connection with consistent speeds.

Generally stable. Rare Broadband dropouts. No problems so have not had to contact support services.

Generally good service with rare dropouts. Speed is adequate for most things, so I see no need to uprate to fibre, as yet.

Virtually impossible to contact. Don't believe the helpline opening times total lies. Not the best or reliable connection either.
