With Ofcom predicting the UK hitting 50% FTTP coverage for homes in March we are making every Friday and Fibre Friday Update Day.

One of those lists of good and bad areas continues to do the rounds of the local press and while one local paper has the bad headline it does recognise that FTTP is available.

It still feels odd to be talking about 50% FTTP coverage after years of it hardly being available in the UK. Ofcom believes we will reach the 50% milestone in March 2023.

While every day is almost always lots of full fibre news a reminder that there are places such as The Halfway, a pub in Tal-y-coed Monmouthshire where poor copper means slow speeds and even phone line problems.

In the last three weeks the UK has edged another point closer towards more premises having access to FTTP than do not.

Tuesday evening saw the creation of a new Government department the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology. Which will bring together parts of DCMS and BEIS.

If the full fibre roll-outs continue at the same pace as the last 5 weeks, the UK would end 2023 with FTTP coverage of 60.7%.

KentOnline reported on 3rd February that residents in the Eden Village area of Sittingbourne where experiencing intermittent broadband due to cabinet batteries going flat and needing to be replaced.

Worcestershire that is currently behind the UK average for Gigabit coverage 58.25% is aiming for 90% coverage by 2027.

Anyone trying to say that new builds should not have full fibre or Gigabit connectivity as standard now has their chance to say so to the Welsh Government. We also share some figures on the breakdown for new build homes in Wales in 2021 and 2022.
