It would appear that something changed back in November 2013 that meant people who had some Ubisoft titles
and a BT Infinity connection were unable to access www.ubi.com/uk and
or uplay.ubi.com thus breaking online game play and even some
single player games that relied on online access too.
Ubisoft has its own user forum with a thread on the problem and it is not clear at all who is at
fault or what the problem actually is.
It seems unlikely the problem is linked to the recent problems with the Openreach FTTC modem (Huawei
model), since the same modem is used with PlusNet, Sky, TalkTalk and a good
number of other FTTC providers. The HomeHub appears to be ruled out also, as
people with third party routers are having similar issues.
Hopefully some exposure of the problem here and other places like Eurogamer.net will get the problem fixed
rather than usual thing where the blame is bounced around as the blame game is
played until finally a techie gets told about the problem and fixes it. Then
once fixed people can go back to enjoying the games such as Assassin’s Creed,
Watchdog and Might and Magic Legacy.
And I thought David Kam-er-ons great firewall of wonderfulness had no use.
The BT controls did not arrive until around five weeks after the problem started, so unlikely to be that, and that is a DNS based solution with BT and people appear to have no problems in that regard.
Also if visiting a site in a web browser the parental controls have a clear pop-up that appears.
Actually, the problems have only just started in the last couple of days.
It’s obviously BT blocking the site and they clearly don’t know what they’re doing.
I imagine they’re trying to communicate with their Firewall team in India and struggling to get the message across as always.
It may be there has been several issues, but certainly evidence of people having had issues since November 2013. Whether its the same issue is another matter.
This was supposedly the solution November 7 when BT changed their routing.
Hi everyone
We have temporarily re-directed our network traffic to get round this problem so it should be back working for you again :smileyhappy:
The issue has been found lie between Ubisoft and and the cogentco network and I would encourage you to continue to report this to them to ensure a permanent fix is put in place.
See the thing is if it works on BT Broadband but not Infinity, the same routing is obviously in place for BT Broadband and BT Infinity.
BT have made a workaround
No doubt BT will blame an issue between Ubisoft and TINET this time
LOL
Nice! Is working now. Looked like it was dying in tinet.net’s first hop.
whereas now it looks like it’s dying on tata.net’s canadian hop
typical indian workaround
to be clear,
1: we are not blocking the site.
2: we have taken action multiple times to deal with a clear congestion problem on the networks that Ubi are using. Tinet and Cogent.
I can safely tell you that we have _way_ more bandwidth than is in use to the points where we interconnect with Ubi’s network providers.
I personally have reached out to UBI to try and resolve this. I personally play a lot of UBI games on Infinity myself!

Neil.
Chief Network Architect – BT.
How come other ISP’s – Sky, Virgin, etc were not affected??
If I look at the networking routing information thats available publicly Sky appear to be are a customer of Tinet, Virgin appear to be a customer of Cogent.
We peer with TInet and Cogent and we are not customers of them, however I can’t tell if thats related or not at this point in time.
ne of the issues in debugging this is that UBI filter ping traffic so its very difficult to see an end to end path. (each hop in a network trace route has a forward path but also a reverse path and can be hugely misleading when using as a debug tool without ping).
As I said I’ve reached out to Ubi and await their contact, in the mean time we have done some work on our end to try and improve this.
Regards,
Neil.
TCP traceroute still works
I need ping 😉 traceroute never tells the true story.
Once I’ve spoke to Ubi i’ll come back with an update until then its all speculation.
You’re the expert 😉
Good luck
“typical indian workaround ”
Racist much?
You clearly have no offshore experience
I have an older ubisoft game,(doesnt use uplay ) but the server system at ubisoft has always been poor, offline several times a day some days(whilst it has brain wind) ubisoft know about it and have for over 5yrs, so far they have done nothing about it, Best advice don’t buy ubisoft games, they don’t support their customers or games
Posted in the forums about routing issues on bt network months ago.. although a different game.
To be told as long as google/bbc etc work it wasn’t bts problem.. After the cost of a VPN im surprised to see this news.
Ill have to spend hours again on the phone line again if they have figured out that the internet is bigger than there network.
