O2 clarifies 3G data speed situation

O2 has issued a statement to clear up the issue around the 128Kbps data speeds on its 3G network that surfaced last week.

"The vast majority of our 3G customers are able to access the internet on their mobile device at speeds of up to 384 KBps or typically up to 1.3 MBps if they have an HSDPA-enabled device. The O2 network is fully HSDPA-enabled and we will be further increasing the maximum speeds available on HSDPA throughout the year, up to 7.2 MBps.

Because of a provisioning error, which came to our attention last week, a small proportion of our 3G customers have not been getting these higher speeds.

We apologise to those customers who were affected. The issue is simple to fix and we will be doing so this week. If customers still have problems after that, they should call O2 in the normal way."

Clarification on 3G speeds from O2

Therefore, in a week or so if you have a strong 3G signal and find speeds are still around the 128Kbps region (when you are expecting 384Kbps or more) contact O2 to see if there is still an issue with the service.

After finding out about this, did a couple of quick tests and I'm getting avergage 100 kbit/sec
Don't want to test too much of course as O2's data charges are rubbish
Guess I'll be one contacting O2 if it's not improved after a week

O2 clearly continue to hold the crown as the worst 3G supplier in the UK. Quite an achievement given Orange are in the same market.. ;)

Is it 7.2Mbps out of a theoretical HSDPA max 14.4Mbps? That would be nice, a rival to the standard BT Max connection.

I was getting the said 1.3Mbit in Hull, where they have only just recently upgraded the network to HSDPA. Then not long after it was capped to 128Kbit... I will do a test soon to see if it has been fixed :-)

Spoke to O2 yesterday and they mentioned that they had unrestricted data speeds for all users and not just business users, although some people were still seeing slow speeds. Now I have to wait 36 hours for the network team to unrestrict me...
