It looks like there is an ongoing outage with Amazon Web Services is impacting many services that people are used to using seamlessly.
While social media sites like Snapchat experiencing issues is annoying, more important services like card payments are seeing payments being declined to the problems with the cloud services.
Some VoIP services appear to be affected too, with people reporting problems contacting Octopus Energy using the telephone.
The AWS Health status dashboard suggests an initial mitigation has started, but that it may take time for services to recover. An earlier message pointed towards a DNS issue i.e. how domain names are translated into an IP address for actual routing and connection to a service.
Good job the ATM network and banking kept going.
Too many important services provided by too few large providers that have failed to have adequate back-up. It’s about time regulators stepped in.
