Opensignal has released a Fixed Broadband Experience report detailing national and regional metrics for fixed broadband providers, with their panel of testing reporting on the experience of users. This includes, download and upload speed, video experience reliability and consistent quality. Nationally, Opensignal has declared that Virgin Media are the winner in all categories.
Virgin Media wins all five of the overall experience awards outright. This means that out of the UK’s national broadband providers, our Virgin Media users have the best available experience when streaming video, the fastest average download and upload speeds, and the most reliable, and the most consistent fixed broadband experience.

Opensignal has also looked regionally at the same metrics and found that Community Fibre excelled in the London area, winning 4 of 5 categories, and Hyperoptic doing best in Scotland. YouFibre performed strongly in Northern England winning in all categories in the North East and North West, although some were joint winners. The full table of winners can be found here.
Whilst it’s obviously great news for the providers in question winning these categories, we do question the methodology here. Virgin Media do not provide a national service (it’s only around 55%) and we wonder if it is fair to compare their fixed-speed services against providers who offer an actual national service, but use a variable-speed product to do so (e.g. all the providers offering superfast broadband based on DSL). Also similarly, the ‘fixed’ service from Three is based on a variable-speed as it uses mobile technology. Whilst it’s technically fixed in that the product is tied to a location by means of the router you use to access it, it is a mobile technology, and perhaps it would be fairer to compare it in that category.
