Broadband 4 Wales Ltd added to Welsh Broadband contract

Broadband for Wales Ltd Logo

An error by the Welsh Government led to the contract announcement for a £10 million broadband contract omitting Broadband 4 Wales Ltd (BB4W Ltd). A change notice has been issued correcting this.

The Contract 2 Lot 2 that aims to deliver broadband speeds of at least 30 Mbps to areas of under 1,000 premises is to be delivered by a mixture of:

  • Airband Community Internet Ltd
  • Fibrus Ltd
  • Wifinity Ltd
  • Broadband 4 Wales Ltd

The £10,000,001 contract is part of a larger £70 million programme known as the Extending High Speed Broadband (ESHB) Project. Openreach holds a £60 million contract, with the aim for the smaller £10m to be used by SME’s and Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprises.

The ESHB project is running from 2025 to 2033, and its goal is a bit different to the much larger DCMS/BDUK Project Gigabit as its aim is to deliver 100% superfast coverage. Of course it is likely that the firms delivering solutions will be using full fibre to achieve that today. While we don’t have any firm information on where the builds will take place, the fact it is addresses slow addresses means we will eventually be looking at the postcodes like the ones our maps show as not superfast in Wales
