Altnet

Altnets are new broadband networks which are challenging the incumbent providers. These may be smaller providers but larger altnets also exist.

Hey! Broadband

Summary

Hey! Broadband is a relatively recent entrant to the UK full-fibre market, focusing on delivering fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) connections to homes in areas that may still be underserved by the larger providers. Because its network runs fibre straight into the property, it avoids many of the bottlenecks associated with older “fibre to the cabinet” or copper-based setups. For households with multiple streaming, gaming or remote-work users, the symmetrical upload and download speeds that Hey! advertise stand out as a real advantage.

Additional Comments

When the service is live at your address, many customers say the performance lives up to the promise. The company’s package range typically begins at around 150 Mbps, with higher tiers reaching 400 Mbps and 900 Mbps in some cases, all under the “full-fibre” banner. Installation is included, the router is supplied, and the pricing structure is made fairly simple and clear – all of which simplifies the switch. Customers typically comment that the setup was neat, the engineers professional, and the resulting connection noticeably better than their previous provider. One of the core selling points is that you’re getting a modern network built for today’s needs rather than adapting legacy infrastructure.

That said, there are a few important caveats. The first is coverage: because Hey! is not one of the giant nationwide providers, its infrastructure is live in selected areas and rollout is still expanding. If your home sits just outside their current footprint you may face a wait or may not yet be eligible. Secondly, while many users report good service, there are recurring mentions of installation delays, slower-than-expected support responses in some cases, or difficulties cancelling when things go wrong. As with many newer providers scaling up, some growing pains are evident. Although the price plans are transparent, users should check the contract length (typically 24 months) and the terms regarding what happens when the contract ends or if you move address.

In practical terms, Hey! Broadband is best suited for households that can access its live full-fibre network and are looking to future-proof their internet connection. If you’re working from home, sharing large files, streaming on multiple devices, or just frustrated with slow uploads from your current provider, switching to a provider like Hey! could be transformative. On the other hand, if you’re in an area where coverage is patchy or you rely on an all-in-one bundle (broadband + TV + mobile) from a major provider, then you’ll want to compare carefully.

Never any problems, no price rises, amazing speed, what's not to love.

I initially complained that the dynamic IP address sometimes changed to an IP that rendered my internet banking, CISCO VPN, Netflix & gaming platforms inoperative. This is unacceptable. I should not have to contact Hey!B to ask for the IP to be rolled over to another one, each time this occurs. This is not the service that I ordered. To work around this, I was advised to pay for a static IP (which didn’t work either, until they found one that did). Why should I have to pay £5 extra per month to have a useable IP address? Ideally, as an internet provider in the UK, all their dynamic IP addresses should be useable. It is proven that not all of their IP addresses in the pool work as expected, and if the only way to resolve this is to have a static IP – then I would expect this to be granted for free. However, they refuse to and offered me £5 for my trouble (which I refused).
