Airband

Summary

Airband Community Internet, a specialist UK ISP founded in 2009 and based in Droitwich, Worcestershire, focuses on bridging the digital divide in rural areas. Backed by abrdn with over £200m invested, it serves over 440,000 premises across the South West (Devon, Somerset), West Midlands (Shropshire, Herefordshire), Home Counties (Oxfordshire, Cheshire), and Wales-targeting spots where Openreach or Virgin Media fall short. If you're in a remote village battling ADSL's glacial 1-10Mbps, Airband's fixed wireless broadband or full fibre broadband could transform your online life from frustrating to fluid.

Additional Comments

Airband deploys two technologies: full fibre (FTTP) for symmetrical speeds up to 900Mbps download/upload, and fixed wireless (AirSpeed) via line-of-sight antennas for up to 1Gbps in select areas (recently boosted by Tarana's next-gen FWA, covering 265,000+ homes by end-2025). Unlimited data is standard-no throttling or caps. All on 24-month contracts with no mid-term hikes; free install, survey, and Nokia WiFi 6 router (plus a second for 600Mbps+).

Setup is straightforward: wireless requires a small roof antenna (30cm), while FTTP involves direct fibre to your home. Airband’s website offers a postcode checker to confirm technology availability, crucial as wireless needs clear line-of-sight to masts (trees or hills can disrupt signals).

Coverage is expanding rapidly, with 71,000 homes added in 2024 alone, but it’s still limited compared to Openreach’s near-universal reach. Unlike some altnets, Airband supports its own infrastructure, reducing reliance on third-party networks and enabling faster fault fixes when issues arise.

Great speeds on fibre - up to about 320Mbps down / 70 Mbps up where I live. Sometimes Airband tell you when there'll be an outage......and sometimes they don't. Recently there was a high packet loss inside their network – I even had to tell them the IP of their router that was causing the problem. A few hours later and it was fixed, but who knows, they may have been onto it anyway. It then happened again the other evening - excessive ping times and packet losses. After a few minutes of no broadband at all suddenly we had an excellent connection again. This all sounds too negative – they do offer a good broadband service - I just wish they would be more communicative with their customers. How about having a real-time and detailed service page, Airband, rather than the very poor one that you have at present?

Airband offer two technologies for internet access. Their first offering was a radio-based technology but recently they’ve been installing fibre to the property (FTTP). This latter technology appears to be much more reliable and so thinkbroadband.com should separate Airband into two separate service providers. It would also be helpful if reviewers would indicate which Airband technology they have.

There are, in effect, two Airbands so they should be rated separately on this site. One service they offer is their wireless radio link and that seems to have a pretty poor reputation. The other service they offer is FTTP and by its very nature should be more reliable. Both these independent internet services do seem to share the same customer support department and this is where Airband need to make significant reforms. My impression is that the support department is understaffed and overwhelmed with issues. My experience so far is that if you don’t need support then their FTTP service works well. It doesn’t support IPv6 which is a shame. They are also doing some weird routing in that your IP address varies depending upon where you’re connected to. It is early days for my FTTP service from Airband. I’ll update this review if things change over time.

Have improved a lot over the last year or two. Speeds and latency generally very good. Wireless packages are affected by the weather but one cannot change the laws of physics. Has to be pretty severe for a total blackout though.

So far they have provided the service they said they would. 40mbps Down 10mbps up although did drop to 21mbps at 18:30 BST 29/07/22

Airband installed in August 2019, we are just less than a Kilometre from the mast and line of sight. Service is 100% solid and faster than advertised.
