Airband

Summary

Airband Community Internet, a specialist UK ISP founded in 2009 and based in Droitwich, Worcestershire, focuses on bridging the digital divide in rural areas. Backed by abrdn with over £200m invested, it serves over 440,000 premises across the South West (Devon, Somerset), West Midlands (Shropshire, Herefordshire), Home Counties (Oxfordshire, Cheshire), and Wales-targeting spots where Openreach or Virgin Media fall short. If you're in a remote village battling ADSL's glacial 1-10Mbps, Airband's fixed wireless broadband or full fibre broadband could transform your online life from frustrating to fluid.

Additional Comments

Airband deploys two technologies: full fibre (FTTP) for symmetrical speeds up to 900Mbps download/upload, and fixed wireless (AirSpeed) via line-of-sight antennas for up to 1Gbps in select areas (recently boosted by Tarana's next-gen FWA, covering 265,000+ homes by end-2025). Unlimited data is standard-no throttling or caps. All on 24-month contracts with no mid-term hikes; free install, survey, and Nokia WiFi 6 router (plus a second for 600Mbps+).

Setup is straightforward: wireless requires a small roof antenna (30cm), while FTTP involves direct fibre to your home. Airband’s website offers a postcode checker to confirm technology availability, crucial as wireless needs clear line-of-sight to masts (trees or hills can disrupt signals).

Coverage is expanding rapidly, with 71,000 homes added in 2024 alone, but it’s still limited compared to Openreach’s near-universal reach. Unlike some altnets, Airband supports its own infrastructure, reducing reliance on third-party networks and enabling faster fault fixes when issues arise.

Chose A&A end of Nov 2025. Connect to Fibre FTTP second week of Dec 2025. Had an outage for 24 days in January 2026 which was due poor maintenance on the part Openreach. Fibre had been installed by OR a few weeks before. 14 poles had to be replaced. Restored service on 14th February 2026. I had daily ( sometimes hourly) contact with a&a by email and phone. I was able to keep them up-to-date with what was happening at our end. About a week before all outage happen I and another neighbour had reported to OR that one there poles had started leaning at about 20° over the road. About 7 days later it collapsed onto the road leaving cables all over the road. A&A were very helpful and communications excellent. Fortunately I had an alternative source of internet and still have.

Good reliability and pleased to be told when the service might be interrupted for 5 mins or so - usually in the early hours of the morning. Contract renewal staff are very helpful. Support staff less so, although I haven’t needed them recently so maybe things have improved. Good speeds - as advertised. TLDR: excellent when nothing needs fixing.
