Virgin Media

Summary

Virgin Media broadband is the UK's largest and incumbent cable broadband and TV operator. We do not list TV packages and you may wish to refer to the Virgin Media website for bundles if you are interested in TV services. For many people Virgin Media broadband stands for high speed, big brand backing and broad availability. Their own cable network reaches millions of homes and in many towns you’ll find their full-fibre or hybrid cable connection offers some of the fastest download packages available. If you want strong headline speeds, they are definitely one to keep an eye on.

Additional Comments

The appeal begins with what you can get. Virgin Media’s fibre network now covers a large number of properties and they have speed tiers that often out-pace what many older providers offer. For streaming, working from home, gaming and multi-device households this is a big plus. The fact that their top superfast broadband packages offer real-world speeds that are notably higher than basic fibre makes them attractive. Many customers report that the actual experience feels like a jump compared to older connections. The brand also benefits from being established and known for big infrastructure investment.

Where they do well it’s obvious. Installs in many areas go smoothly. Engineers turn up, the infrastructure is modern and the connection to the home is solid. For people whose properties are already covered and set-up internally well (good router, decent Wi-Fi placement, minimal legacy wiring) you can get a premium broadband experience. If your house is fairly typical and you use broadband for everything from video calls to streaming 4K to hosting a gaming session you may find Virgin Media broadband speeds deliver that with less compromise.

That said there are several potential downsides worth knowing. First, while coverage is extensive it is not universal in the same way as the nationwide copper-based networks. If your area is on the edge of Virgin’s footprint you may face limited speed options or longer install wait-times. Next, the upload speeds aren’t always as strong compared with some full-fibre providers that offer symmetrical or near-symmetrical performance. Some users who upload lots of files, run servers, stream from home and do heavy work will note this limitation. Also, as with many big providers, the headline deals for new Virgin Media customers are very competitive but renewal prices can climb. Many existing customers report being surprised at how their monthly cost increased after an initial promotional term ended.

Customer service is another area where opinions diverge. On the one hand many users say they rarely have trouble and the connection works well. On the other hand, there are substantial numbers of reviews highlighting long wait times, frustrating experiences when issues occur and frustration with billing or contract terms. In recent surveys Virgin Media broadband was reported to get more complaints per 100,000 customers than many other major providers. If support and fault-handling are important to you then this is something to check for your postcode and ask about directly.

Another real-world factor to keep in mind is your internal setup and what you expect from the service. A high speed connection to your home is great but if your router is in the wrong place, your wiring is old, or Wi-Fi signal is weak in certain rooms, you may not fully feel the benefit. In large homes or properties with thick walls it may make sense to invest in a better router or mesh Wi-Fi set-up to make the most of what Virgin is offering. Also check what contract you are signing up for, what the price will become after the initial term, and whether installation or equipment costs apply.

If uploads are vital for you, if contract renewal prices worry you or you need the highest level of support after hours then it may be worth comparing other providers too. For many households though, if the conditions are right, Virgin Media broadband remains a very strong option for high-speed broadband backed by a major brand.

customer service is 90 percent call centres abroad and trust me when i say they have no idea what they are talking about and will hang up on you and be rude at any moment. strange also how they wont offer deals or work on your price etc but speak to English call centre and they mostly will try help. its like talking to 2 different companies. virgin used to be the internet everyone wanted for speed and gaming pings and now its become very very unreliable always having problems in the area, slow speeds and bad connections for gaming. when bt have fibre in more places virgin will become a last resort broadband, if bt fibre was in my area id leave now this second, had a bad connection for 11 Months!!! told its due to too many customers using it at once, got that sorted and after 6 months we are back with the exact same issue again and they never offer a solution to help!

Virgin Media is unreliable, unhelpful, and overpriced. They are only to quick to offer upgrades but when it comes to sorting problems, their customer services are appalling, they really don't understand the first thing about the technology that they are supposed to be supporting. I rang in today, my broadband was down or intermittent, I was told to see if I could get a web page on my iPhone. Of course I could, if I'm not on Wifi then my phone picks up mobile data. Because I could get onto the web via my phone, my internet must be fine. I got so frustrated with the stupid woman that I hung up eventually. If there were any other pbroadband provider I would jump immediately.

Price goes up inversely with speed delivered.

I am happy to have been a customer of Virgin Media for many a long year, enjoying superfast broadband, with pretty decent Wi-Fi too. BUT, a BIG BUT, Virgin Media have one very nasty habit. Too often they stick up the cost of their service, without any justification, just made-up pork pie words to pretend they have reasons for their regular increases. I just wish my income would increase by the same percentage as their monthly cost - roughly 11%. Perhaps it's time for the government or OFCOM to step in and impose a ceiling on the annual percentage increase!?

Reliable service and fast connection

For a considerable time speeds and reiabiliyty have been excellent. I required brief support for intermittent wifi router problem which was fixed quickly..... very good swift response from "Virgin Community" moderator

Really disappointed. The high download and upload speeds (the latter really not happening) cannot overshadow the lack of reliability. Ongoing recurring latency issues and frequent drops, packet loss between 2 and 15% per day are not uncommon. Definitely cannot recommend them.

Speeds good but reliability is poor.

I have been a customer of Cable & Wireless, later Telewest and then NTL and, finally, in its current ownership, Virginmedia (VM) - all, ultimately, the same company. And while the offer (of cable TV and broadband) has improved immeasurably, what has not has been its customer service which has now deteriorated to a wholly unacceptable standard: a couple of months ago, we'd notice a severe deterioration in our broadband, with our various WiFi devices being able to connect to our VM router. It was only at the 4th attempt to contact a human being at VM that we managed the next best thing - someone on chat. Previously one could get through to a call centre easily (albeit one somewhere in SW Asia with staff who were often exceedingly difficult to understand) - but not on this last occasion: VM's automated telephone service just takes you round in circles, and you end up where you started, feeling utterly frustrated, if not angry. Even getting through to someone on chat was a tedious service, taking us nearly 1½ hours before the agent announced that there was nothing more that he could do and would book a technician in to visit us. It was quite evident that this agent was answering multiple callers at the same time, spending a few minutes with one before saying that they needed to do this or that - and then not getting back to you for 15 minutes. You are, right from the outset, treated as an absolute idiot with an automatic assumption made that you know nothing about digital technology. Our reality was quite easy - we knew that there must be a problem with our router - and, indeed, this is just what the technician announced after barely 5 minutes of testing in situ. In fact there were 2 problems - one with the kit and one due to some back-end reprogramming that VM had done at about the time our problems first arose, several weeks before. The technician swiftly swapped the router for a new one, reset the password to our saved one and, lo and behold, everything was working again. Of course, despite having had at times no usable working broadband during much of the previous 3 weeks (I used to get online at home, where I work, by using my mobile personal hotspot), you don't get offered ANYTHING by VM by way of recompense for their poor service and even worst customer service. We are moving home in about a month - only 300 yards - but the one thing we most definitely will not be taking with us is VM. We will probably use Zen for broadband (and VOIP phone) and for TV services look to Sky. VM need to rapidly up their game. Their product is not bad and, yes, you do get hight done and up-load speeds. But if something goes wrong they have made it as difficult as possible to get it resolved, especially if it involves their WiFi router. My strong advice, as someone who has taken cable now for decades, is to avoid VM, especially now that BT Openreach has caught up.
