Cuckoo

Summary

Cuckoo Broadband positions itself as a straightforward, full-fibre-only provider that aims to simplify your broadband life. Unlike ISPs that still depend on copper or hybrid fibre/copper setups, Cuckoo uses direct-to-home fibre (FTTP) and offers three main broadband speeds, 150 Mb/s, 500 Mb/s, and 900 Mb/s - all of which promise symmetrical upload and download speeds.

Cuckoo is the retail brand of Fern Trading which also owns Jurassic Fibre, Swish Fibre, Giganet and Vorboss.

Additional Comments

The idea is that you get a future-proof connection straight away if your home is fibre-ready. The hardware is also a strong selling point: Cuckoo broadband includes a high-end WiFi router (an eero Pro 6E) as part of the package, so you don’t have to buy or upgrade a separate kit for a decent home network.

One of Cuckoo broadband's standout features is its transparency and simplicity. Pricing is clearly laid out, setup/installation fees are waived, and contracts are either 12 or 24 months with no hidden first-year discounts that bump up later. Users tend to report great customer service, too: they often highlight that if they do need to call for support, the staff are friendly, responsive and seem genuinely helpful. On the independent review site Trustpilot, for example, the score is around 4.2 out of 5 from several thousand reviews.

There are a few caveats worth bearing in mind. First, the biggest challenge is availability: because Cuckoo only works where full-fibre is already live, if your property is still stuck on copper or a slower fibre-to-cabinet setup, then Cuckoo may simply not be an option. Second, some users have reported booking switches or installations only to face delays or less-than-perfect experiences.

I don't want to sound too gushing but I have only good things to say about Cuckoo. After years with Virgin Media this is a breath of fresh air.

We only have FTTC, which is in view and we get a reliable 70Mbps connection. Very happy with Cuckoo, no in contract price gauging. The only bad thing was that their 'magic link' account login usually didn't work. Then a few weeks ago they announced they were withdrawing their service and pushing customers like us to some outfit I'd never heard of, Home Telecom. They make a lot of their Truspilot ratings but they consist mostly of detailed, plausible 1* ones and lots of relentlessly similar 5* reviews which look very much like they came from a fake review factory. "Norbert fixed my issue to my satisfaction" sort of stuff. If you believed them you would have to accept that Home Telecom have a huge number of staff in their support area. So we were only on a monthly rolling basis and I quickly decided to move to Zen Internet. Even if we had been mid contract I would have insisted on penalty free escape- even if their ts & cs allowed them to move customers to someone suitable, Home Telecom's reviews surely exclude them from eligibiliyty.

Cuckoo broadband was a fantastic supplier in the past. Now that Fern Trading has taken control the quality of customer support has gone down hill. I've been without internet for 48 hours and counting. Cuckoo Broadband originally wanted to send out a BT Opeanreach Engineer but no appointment was made. I was told I would be getting a new router delivered to my property today but it never showed up and when I asked the rep who ordered why it had not been sent she said sorry and wasn't sure why I wasn't getting a replacement router. I've decided enough is enough and I am moving to a new provider at the end of the month. This is madness. If you have a stable connection cuckoo is fine, the customer support is what lets the company down. My new provider diagnoised the fault in less than 4 minutes but Cuckoo took 2 days and the customer support reps claim they aren't technical. I was told they needed to contact a provisioning team but that team wasn't in the office at the weekend. it seems that the company's departments aren't talking to each other and there is serious communication issues. Going by the glassdoor reviews I believe the culture of the company especially in customer support has gone down hill with customer support. I've tired using the virtual chat bot, telephone number, email but to get cuckoo to communicate is a challenge.

I was with Plusnet fro some 12 years, Kew then Brentford. It took a while to get rid of the separate landline charge but they were generally pretty reliable and resonably priced. But then they aped BT in having heavy in-contract price increases baked into their ts and cs. Nasty, and it got much nastier when inflation rocketed to over 10%. I was not going to put up with unmerited price increases of around 15% so I looked arround. Plent of choices but many seemed to have goodies up front followed by price increses later whilsty still locked in. Then I found Cuckoo. They offered a better router than PlusNet (with VoIP capabilities) and have a decent, straightforward deal with no automatic price increases. And they give 1% of their gross to charity. Switchover was smooth and we've had rock solid 70meg (only FTTC available in our place) internet ever since. A happy customer. I also switched my wife's SIM-only mobile phone deal from Plusnet (not offering 5G) to Smarty.

Just switched away from Plusnet after 12 years. The FTTC broadband was fast and reliable but what drove me away was their awful inflation plus 3.9% scam. 15% price rises when incomes are rising far less fast! An outrage now committed by the majority of ISPs. Cuckoo do not do that and give 1% of their gross to charitable projects. There is no difference in speed or reliability but I do have a fixed price for the next year. The Cuckoo router is somewhat better than the old PlusNet one (eg it has VoIP options) but its wifi coverage is not that good and I still use BT discs to spread wifi round the apartment.
