Altnets are new broadband networks which are challenging the incumbent providers. These may be smaller providers but larger altnets also exist.

B4SH

Summary

B4SH, short for Broadband for Surrey Hills, is a not-for-profit, volunteer-driven full fibre network built specifically for the rural Surrey Hills area. Set up in 2018 by local residents fed up with poor copper connections, the network now serves several hundred homes and businesses with a fully buried fibre-to-the-home service. Inspired by the success of B4RN in the north of England, B4SH has grown steadily through community involvement and government voucher funding.

Additional Comments

What makes B4SH unusual is how the network gets built in the first place. Rather than digging up roads and pavements, B4SH lays its fibre across fields, woodland and gardens, approaching properties from the rear with the landowner's permission. There are no telegraph poles involved, the cable runs entirely underground, and most of the physical digging has historically been done by local volunteers rather than contracted engineers.

The result for customers is a symmetric 1Gbps connection, with uploads matching downloads, delivered uncontended so your speed doesn't drop just because your neighbours are also online. Reviews frequently mention how big a change this is for people who've spent years dealing with deteriorating copper lines, weak signal in storms, or trees interfering with overhead cables, problems that simply don't apply once you're on buried fibre.

Because B4SH is a community organisation rather than a commercial company, expansion happens gradually, spreading out neighbourhood by neighbourhood as funding, volunteers and landowner agreements allow. It also provides free connections to local village halls, churches and schools as part of its community remit. Coverage is limited to the Surrey Hills area itself, so this isn't an option if you live outside that specific patch of countryside.
