We have looked at all the broadband lines that we monitor and used these to plot the latency of these to see the affect of the World Cup on the UK broadband latency. Packet loss is also shown which displays when a ping does not receive a response. This is shown in red at the top of the graph.
The graphs shows a distinct rise in latency and a packet loss increase during the England vs Slovenia game on the 23rd of June and England vs Germany on the 27th of June caused by people watching the match online using streaming media services such as BBC iPlayer.
To produce these graphs, we take the maximum latency measurement within a 100 second sample for each monitored line, and then work out the percentile. A 90th percentile would for example ignore 10% of the worst performing connections.
We will be adding graphs in due course showing latency of other World Cup games and other events.
