Our speed tester certainly can. We've produced this video to show you what happened when we took our laptop and plugged it into a gigabit connection right at the heart of IDNET's (www.idnet.net) network in London. Watch and find out how it performed.
Hi, I'm Sebastien from thinkbroadband and today I'd like to talk to you about broadband speeds.
Virgin Media have recently expressed concerns about the accuracy and reliability of online speed test websites in measuring the performance of their 50 meg broadband service.
We've been running our speed test for many years now and accuracy of our speed test data is very important to us. We've built our speed test from the ground up from designing the software to the network it runs on, so we know what it's capable of.
A few months ago, we started upgrading our speed test platform to gigabit connections, to cope with the next generation of broadband services.
To show you how confident we are that our speedtest will continue to meet the needs of 50 meg broadband, we've come here to London's Docklands; to the nervecentre of the UK Internet.
We're here in IDNET's hosting facility in Docklands to plug into the gigabit core of a broadband service provider's network and see how the speedtest will perform. So, let's have a look at where we're plugged in.
As you can see, this is our laptop cable and it's plugged into a gigabit switch on IDNET's network. So let's have a look at how we perform.
Let's go to our website; It's important that everyone realises that whilst we're plugged into a gigabit connection on IDNET's network, we're not going to get gigabit performance because obviously there are other servers hosted here as well which will be taking up some bandwidth.
As you can see, the test is already performing quite well, and it's now completed. We have a speed test result of 270 Mbps downstream and 273 Mbps upstream.
So as you can see, our speedtester will have no problems dealing with the next generation of broadband connections.
We'd like to thank IDNET for allowing us to use their facilities to demonstrate the performance of our speed test, but we need to stress that these speeds can be achieved from any well connected network.
