Altnet

Altnets are new broadband networks which are challenging the incumbent providers. These may be smaller providers but larger altnets also exist.

G.Network

Summary

G.Network Broadband is a UK provider that specialises in full fibre broadband. What sets it apart from some larger firms is its focus on bringing gigabit‑level speeds to homes and businesses in areas that have been under served. The company has built its own full fibre network in London, which means availability varies by postcode. Wherever it is live you can expect modern speeds and a service that feels built for today’s broadband demands.

Additional Comments

Many customers like G.Network because it keeps things simple. Plans are easy to understand and the pricing is clear. Standard installation is usually included and many packages come with a free router, which removes extra upfront costs. For everyday use such as video streaming, remote working and gaming, the connection is solid and dependable for most homes. If you have multiple people online at once the higher speed tiers are especially useful because they handle the load without bogging down.

One of the benefits of G.Network’s approach is that in many areas it can deliver symmetrical speeds. That means your upload rate matches your download rate, which matters for cloud backups, uploads, video conferencing and creative work. A lot of households and small businesses will appreciate that balance because it feels more responsive than some older services.

That said, there are a few practical points to think about before you commit. Coverage is the first one. Because G.Network does not operate its own nationwide infrastructure yet, availability depends on whether the wholesale partner has built full fibre to your street. You will need to check your postcode and see whether the service is live or due soon. In some places you may only have lower speed options at first, with faster tiers coming later as the network expands.

After a period of a copper-slow connection, speed is considerably up and consistently so. And at a very reasonable price.

Yet again, I have reason to be appreciative of G.network’s customer service. The recent upgrade to Sequoia 15.2 operating service ‘killed’ my ancient Samsung w/l printer stone dead. G.netowrk helped with reestablishing wireless connectivity with a new hp printer. To date, G.network cannot be faulted, well, not by me, that is. Brian

I HAVE already submitted one positive review. While I’m not totally impressed with the new Nokia Beasons2, I do still have 100% confidence in this ISP’S customer service, so long as Bolaji is in charge. I would describe the service he, together with his subordinates, offers in best described as caring and personal. Indeed, from what I can read on the Net, such personal service is the exception, rather the rule. Of my 3 Nokia Beacon 2s, two are as good as gold and the third is, alas, to say the least , a bit temperamental and may well need to be replaced. Meantime, I’m willing to ‘live with it’, in the hope that, possibly, it’s ’self-healing’ We shall see. I ’ve been with G.network for almost 5 years and have become, in that period, quite a fan of the outfit, even where they have been excruciatingly slow in converting early users’ Cabinets and routers. In the very much longer term, I may change my clients, eg, printer, over to wifi7 compatible kit and, perhaps, even but the Nokia into bridge mode, if I purchase my own router. But that, as they say in German is ‘future-music’ [Zukunftsmusik] Finally, while I understand the possibly statutory pressure to replace HUAWEI kit, I’m not absolutely convinced that these NOKIA substitutes are actually an improvement. Certainly, Nokia’s ‘overhead’ seems greater both hard-wired and when using Wifi6. Finally, it’s important to point out that there is a massive consistency of speed where I have things hardwired in 1 room only.

further thoughts on G.network: continues to surprise and delight with increasingly reliable [fast WIFI] speeds and customer service that, in my experience, has been outstanding. Using an ethernet cable, I'm getting total consistency of speed outcomes. Wifi consistency is improving and, as is to be expected, can, somewhat, depend on the age and nature of the device upon which one is running the speed test. Best results seem to come from, eg. MacBook Air with M1 chip. I don't pretend to 'grasp' the ins-and-outs of the technology but, what I have grasped, is that, from time to time, there will be anomalous WIFI speeds and, with respect to those outcomes, one just has to bite on the bullet until the speed is again running faster. It may be a case of: [the search for] perfection is the enemy of the good. The monthly fee is not super low but, as I see it, is still worth shelling out for. Of course, this is only one persons experience: 'your mileage may vary' yada yada yada

While the physical upgrading of G.network’s infrastructure has been unacceptably slow in my neck of the woods, I have found customer service to be unfailingly willing to attend my premises to deal with obstinate connectivity problems. The adjective I would use to describe the spirit of G.network’s customer service is, in addition to general competence, also kindness and patience, which, to a pensioner like me, means a lot. Also, I am slowly discovering that speed test results can also be a function of the age and capability of the clients being deployed in the speed tests. My wife’s fairly recent Mackbook Air with M1 chip seems to indicate significantly better/quicker results than my 2nd Gen iPad and/or iPhone 7 Brian

G.Network dug up the roads in 2020, but didn't get a way-leave until Islington Council granted one to G.Network, Community Fibre and Hyperoptic in 2023. The council are freeholders for my building. Their systems wouldn't take orders for my address until I tried again on 5 March, when they accepted. Their sign up process states "contact in 2 days to arrange survey if required" but that otherwise they'd "be in touch to arrange insstallation". 10 days later, no call and no emails. Call them, and am told that the person who can help me is in a meeting, but they'll call back in "half an hour". No call back comes. Online help won't allow me to create ticket becuase I don't have a product assigned to me. Use online chat instead. Agent - unable to use capital letters or grammar - tells me that they can't install at my address because they have no permission from Islington Council. This is despite the widely announced partnership with the big 3 full fibre providers. I ask if this means they've cancelled my order, to which the agent asks "so you want me to cancel the order?". Is it cancelled/are they unable, or what?? In the end I told them to cancel the order. No sign of confirmation by email as requested.
