Altnet

Altnets are new broadband networks which are challenging the incumbent providers. These may be smaller providers but larger altnets also exist.

Brighton Fibre

Summary

Brighton Fibre is a small, independent full fibre network builder focused squarely on the city of Brighton and Hove. Having spent its early years quietly building out infrastructure before going public, it now serves tens of thousands of properties using its own gigabit-capable FTTP network. The company has built a reputation for a community-first, low-frills approach to broadband, steering away from the call centres and contract traps that come with bigger providers.

Additional Comments

Brighton Fibre stands out as much for how it builds its network as for the broadband itself. Rather than digging up roads everywhere, the company has made use of existing infrastructure where it can, including old underground duct networks from decades past, to reduce both cost and disruption. It also runs its network using low-power computing and renewable-backed exchanges, with the stated aim of keeping its energy footprint as small as possible.

On the customer side, Brighton Fibre keeps things simple. There are no lengthy contracts, no hidden fees and no automated phone menus to fight through if something goes wrong. Most of the team are engineers rather than call centre staff, so when you do need support, you're generally talking to someone who actually understands the network rather than reading from a script.

The network has focused its early build on parts of the city that were previously underserved, including streets and shops in the North Laine area, before expanding further across Brighton and Hove. Coverage is growing steadily, but it remains a local network, so it won't be an option if you live outside the city or its immediate surroundings.
