Top 10 Fastest Broadband ISPs for October 2002

Monthly results from our ISP Speed Test. Congratulations to Nildram who have topped the chart for a second month in a row, with a commanding victory of 40Kbps average over second placed Zen Internet. PIPEX have slipped from 4th to 8th with an average loss of 21Kbps, but are certainly not the only ISP to suffer from reduced performance during October.

Freeserve, Tiscali and BT Broadband (BT's 'no frills' ADSL service) failed to make the top 10 with average downstream speeds of 374, 366 and 353Kbps respectively. Such a wide variation in average speeds, from a relatively large sample size could be viewed as a concern for many potential and existing broadband consumers. With issues such as peer to peer bandwidth consumption becoming more prevalent in recent months, this could signify the beginnings of a more contended and congested service provided by many ISPs.

Please note that smaller ISPs may be excluded from this list due to a lack or absence of speed test data. ISPs are ranked by average downstream speed for 512Kbps connections with a minimum of 150 confirmed test results ("total" column). In addition, we urge our users to try our ISP Comparator which considers other factors such as reliability and customer service. Remember to ask in our Message Boards if you're choosing a new ISP!
