UK broadband speed test results for September 2020

No big surprises this month as Virgin Media Gig1 and BT 900 services dominate the top of the table and that pattern is probably going to remain until 2 Gbps and faster services become common, i.e. a good many years

The Q3/2020 average speeds for the UK came in at median download 30.6 Mbps upload 6.7 Mbps and the mean download was 46.8 Mbps with 10.9 Mbps upload. The results for the last quarter highlight that while some people are able to and are signing up for the fastest services which is lifting the mean figures for the UK and its various council areas the median is going to be more stubborn. This is simply a factor that the most popular services in our monthly results during September in decreasing order of popularity was BT Superfast 1 55/10 FTTC, Sky Fibre 40/10 FTTC, Virgin Media 200 Mbps, BT Superfast 2 80/20 FTTC and Virgin Media 100 Mbps.

If your service is missing then run a speed test and if you are with one of the numerous FTTP operators and the speed test is not detecting your ISP automatically then get in touch with us and we will get their IP blocks added to the detection systems (all we need is you to send us a link to one of your speed tests, tell us the ISP and we will do the rest).

What does Speed of bottom 10%, 20% mean, especially virgin 1gb and bt fibre 900?

Speeds seem very low for full fibre?

  • jamie001

It means if there was 10,000 tests that the bottom 10% got a speed of under 562.3 Mbps in the case of Virgin Media Gig1 i.e. 1000 of the tests

Remember full fibre (which is not what most of Gig1 is) is still a shared medium in the local fibre network and the ISP network and wider internet.

Add to this the variations from people using WiFi and you can see why there is a wide variety of speeds

All full fibre does is remove the variable that is down to distance affecting speeds.

Thanks for explaining andrew, makes perfect sense now.
