Where Virgin Media Gig1 is available across the UK

VIrgin Media in the last couple of days announced that Leeds, Bradford, Glasgow and Falkirk areas will now have option of their DOCSIS 3.1 (1108 Mbps download, 50 Mbps upload) Gigabit service.

We are aware the cyan colour does not stand out very well, but this colour is used to contrast with other layers on our internal map system.

We have now mapped the roll-out and the many postcodes will flag up with Gig1 availability in any package search and via our API system.

The current DOCSIS 3.1 Gig1 service is highly asymmetric with just 50 Mbps upload, but this is largely down to the fact that the upload data is still using DOCSIS 3.0 channels, future upgrades will move upload traffic to the DOCSIS 3.1 protocol and at that point higher upload speeds will become available.

Virgin Media is due to upgrade all its DOCSIS 3.0 areas to 3.1 in the next 12 to 18 months, so all those waiting for the opportunity and feeling capped by the existing 500 Mbps service will not have to wait too long.

With Edinburgh, Glasgow, Falkirk, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Bradford, Birmingham, Reading and Southampton all with the Gigabit service available, the question now is which areas will be announced in the next batch and when.

Update: Just learnt that Virgin Media is running free setup options on broadband only and bundles service with a 12 or 18 month contract until 19th August, a saving of £35.

I have 200Mb/s download with 20Mb/s upload using a Super Hub 3 but I'm awaiting a better upload speed.

I hear talk of a Super Hub 4 being required for symmetric DOCSIS 3.1 but I'd be happy with a 4:1 ratio asymmetric setup for now. How likely is it that VM will supply 200:50 or better on existing Super Hub 3 equipment?
