New build homes continue to show the way for full fibre roll-outs

We last covered the statistics behind new properties in the UK back in February 2020, which means we are overdue by a week or two late in showing the latest trends.

Levels of superfast and full fibre coverage in UK new builds since 2012

We led with the headline 83% of new homes in 2019 have a full fibre option, and from a glance at the updated chart where January 2020 has been added you might think this figure has fallen, but things are rising. The reason for the dip is that 2019 rose from 83.3% to 85.1% and the first month of 2020 is currently at 84.8%. This rise is not just because policies to make full fibre the default broadband infrastructure are filtering through the long building chain, but also that Openreach appears to going back to recently built estates and often rolling out FTTP commercially. The advantage of this is that the duct network is modern and should be in a decent condition.

For those diving into these stats for the first time, a reminder that the postcode existence and location is taken from the ONS PD dataset which is released every three months. The three month cycle means that in March 2020 we got access to the Jan 2020, Nov and Dec 2019 postcodes, and the Feb, Mar and April 2020 postcodes will be started on in the next couple of weeks.

Obviously the lockdown period is going to impact the number of new properties seen in 2020 but we will not get a feel for that until its time for our next update in three months time.

The cycle of updating for new properties along with all the other changes to broadband availability to existing properties goes on all the time, but if you are living in a new home and our availability checker does not recognise you or is missing some options feel free to drop us a note.
