TalkTalk speeds for the last 60 days

TalkTalk is the featured ISP of the week as we look back over the last 60 days to see how the different metrics from our speed test show how the provider has been performing. By looking back into February we can see the pattern before any of the lockdown and work from home situation impacted.

The download and upload charts show a consistent performance over the weeks and for those wondering why the bottom 10%, 20% and 25% speeds are so low with a big jump to the median speeds, the answer is that TalkTalk still has a good number of customers using ADSL2+.

It is possible to suggest that the latency has been a couple of milliseconds higher since 23rd March, but if you look at the left hand side of the chart you can see a similar period of marginally higher latency. The standard deviation for the latency dataset is 7.1 ms with a mean of 71.8ms so the variations look within the realms of what we would expect from crowd sourced speed test results.

Across the board for all the providers things are following the usual patterns still. Next week we will draw up the graphs for EE and their fixed line services.

Comments

Our household uses TalkTalk adsl via Utility Warehouse and we've seen no change since the lockdown.

So no sign of any increase in the httpx1 download speeds since ~25 days ago?

(https://www.thinkbroadband.com/news/8699-millions-working-from-home-and-home-schooling-how-is-broadband-performing = "TalkTalk have increased the single thread download speed here, it's doubled, 8-18Mbps, over the last 3-4 days. Now matches the multi download in this impacted area.)

Haven't noticed any difference in speed, but then I don't run speedtests all the time. I don't pay for a broadband line to test it constantly. I do see a smattering of packet loss in the evenings on the Broadband Monitor, along with the usual weird upwards slope of yellow on occasion.

Not all versions of the speed test run the single download test, so data sample is smaller and also more impacted by issues like Wi-Fi so is not featured in this data set.

Our broadband has been awful. Cuts off several times a night. There is no one to talk to or anyway to change or try to upgrade. Account o ly let's me continue the same rubbish broadband for another 2 years. No way out

We have a TalkTalk Business connection and will be migrating away to Zen.
The latency spikes and random disconnects since the mass WFH has started means we cannot depend on TTB.

@solcuerda "I don't run speedtests all the time. I don't pay for a broadband line to test it constantly."

Seems like a strange statement. I wouldn't think that anyone constantly runs speedtests.

My use of Netfilix and Amazon Prime, while two other users are video conferencing, doesn't buffer and the normal internet use hasn't slowed.

What does any user want? If my connection had reduced from 60 mbps to 50 mbps so what?

@broadband66 "Seems like a strange statement. I wouldn't think that anyone constantly runs speedtests." Posts in the forums suggest that there are those who run scripts to perform speedtests hourly. As to why they do this, I haven't a clue and like yourself prefer to put my connection to a more productive use.

TalkTalk has been consistent here throughout the lockdown, bar overnight maintenance a week ago.

I agree with the comments of broadband66 and other favourable customers.
TT doesn't seem to have dropped speed since the lock down - certainly not so that we would notice.
The comment from Rozmcmanus is completely against our experience and we have been with TT and before them Tiscali for many years.
