January 2020 update on broadband availability across the UK, nations and regions

The last five weeks have seen a higher than usual jump in the availability of full fibre with the UK adding 0.87 percentage points of coverage since 7th January 2020. The rise in FTTP coverage is down to no big jump from any single provider but it is more about announcements made many months ago finally bearing fruit and services becoming available to the public.

We will cover the changes that arise from new build homes later in February, we are in the process of doing a third pass to look at postcodes from previous quarters to see if properties have been built since we last looked at the postcodes.

While full fibre availability is rising, the change in the levels of superfast coverage remain muted. The BDUK projects are largely delivering full fibre now but the scattered nature of properties where intervention is taking place means the impact on the regional figures is often small and is sometimes negated by clusters of new homes appearing without access to full fibre.

Yorkshire is comfortably overtaking every other English region now with full fibre coverage, 2.33% in one month is staggering. Understandably given Openreach Fibre First in Leeds and Bradford, very organised BDUK phase 3 rollouts and Cityfibre doing various pockets of towns and cities.

Do these figures come from actual read speeds or openreach's expected range? I ask as I'm supposed to get up to 25~37Mbps but get 22Mbps. I can't imagine I'm the only person on FTTC not seeing superfast speeds but suspect a lot of us get falsely marked as superfast. Real vs theoretical really matters.

A big increase in full fibre availability over the month, but a relatively small drop in sub-USO (~8000) and very small drop in sub-2Mbps (~600). I expect that those of us stuck on ADS are in for a very long wait, even when USO comes into effect.
